Why is there so much emphasis on wearing masks?

I really don’t understand what masks are supposed to accomplish. They won’t prevent your from getting sick. They say it prevents you from spreading the virus. However, if I’m sick I’m home in bed. If I’m asymptomatic I’m not coughing.
So, what do masks really accomplish. Don’t respond with some shite you heard Don Lemon say on CNN. I want real scientific research from a reputable source that specifically outlines how a flimsy arse piece of cheap fabric stops the spread of Covid-19 and corresponding deaths
I’ve pulled data from the CDC and have done my own analysis. There were a total of 71 Covid-19 related deaths in the U.S. for the week ending 7/4/2020. The daily identification of cases has risen, but the rate is measured at less than 5,000 per day in Texas.
The curve has been flattened. I don’t feel we’re really at a crisis point anymore. I’m even at the point where I do not think the virus is as contagious as originally feared.
I think hand washing is a much bigger deal. I’ll add that someone is making a lot of money off masks.

Have you seen the riot gear worn by Antifa and BLM? Not now but the last time they came out of the wood work. All in masks. If not go look and think about your question again.

Probably the best thing to come from the flu this time. I hope it is a lasting effect.

All these dinky little mask don't do shite. It's to give people the false since of security, and that its for their protection. Makes the politicians handing down these mask orders appear to be concerned about their minions that adore them. Most sane people see it for what it is... Forced compliance.

I'll say my hygiene has gotten worse because I am alway dicking with my unbearable mask rather than worrying about handwashing etc..
If you ever doubted the USA could fall from within just loom at the steeple wearing mask. We are in the minority that think its idiotic.

I hate the fricking mask and agree it doesn’t protect you. frick it says right on the box. But the mask crowd is winning. I know clients who were hardcore anti maskers who have now fallen in line. Theyre not Karen level but they are compliant.

Ok, who’s the jackass who down votes my original post but fails to provide scientific proof to the value of masks?

First, I hate wearing a mask. It makes it a little more difficult to breath, and triggers a little claustrophobia.
Second, I’m a little iffy on mandatory law enforced mandates. But there are other laws I disagree with like mandatory motorcycle helmets or seatbelt use. But at least mask do affect others.
But this:
Is misinformation.
If you are just beginning to feel ill, forced into public despite feeling poorly, or beginning to feel better, you are a threat to others. But even if uninfected or asymptomatic, you caugh or sneeze several times a day. This carries the risk of unintended infection of others.
You may not agree with the posted speed limit on a road, but for the safety of others you should obey it if not yourself.
Edit: Down voted twice but not disputed.

What data I've seen on masks suggests around a 10% improvement in chances if wearing an n95 mask. The piece of cotton most people are wearing doesn't significantly protect against spread at all. Also, there is no end game. There is no plan. There is no x,y,z conditions to be met. It's just "wear your mask!" That's not good enough. A speed limit can give quite a bit more hard data on why it's instituted and what it's supposed to ultimately accomplish, so I don't see the comparison.

Visual compliance. Its never been about protecting anyone from anything.

That...and social distancing. Although, where we are at this week, no one bothers with it unless they are sitting down to eat.

I’ve stopped going into BR due to their mandatory masks while in businesses. I wait and get what I need in Livingston, WBR, or Tangipahoa.
Surely I’m not the only one with this mindset and hopefully it puts just enough strain on local businesses that they’ll push back on the mandate.

They have successfully pulled the biggest scam I’ve ever seen. If your not 85 years old or have some other health issues, there is no reason to alter your life at all. And yet.... cue the hand wringing, pearl clutching nancies who will now tell me how cruel and selfish I am because I don’t want to sacrifice my kids and grandkids futures. If we could somehow get into these peoples heads, I swear we would find out they don’t believe this shite either. They just want to ruin the economy because the President won’t take their shite. Or they suffer from some other mental disorder. Almost every detail of this wu flu has turned out to be a falsehood or misinformation of some kind.
