I really noticed it after 1994.
Newt, with all his faults, actually seems like the last Republican leader of the House or Senate capable of lighting a fire.

Republican leadership is a bit of an oxymoron at this point

It's also hard to govern when your message is, "Don't trust the government!"

Not if you're able to actually articulate ways to decrease it's meddling into everything.

1. They are scared
2. They are weak
3. They are complicit in the ruse

Of course in 1994, they were in charge and had to deliver and they hated it. Since Reagan was gone (and Bush 1), the media turned their guns on them (whereas they were basically left alone and occasionally patted on the head like good dogs) and they wilted.
Woah, woah, woah...
The time when republicans had control of the House in the 90s was the last time there was any real fiscal responsibility in the federal government. You may hate Newt Gingrich, but he held Clinton's feet to the fire.

Republicans are only there for the Democrats to bounce feces off of. Most of them have no opinions or actual policies to push forward. They just sit there, waiting for Democrats to present something... and then they shine. For theatrics, some of them will oppose whatever the Democrats say. While others will agree with what the Democrats want.
When Democrats are done.. the Republicans go back to being idle..

Because spelling out what you will do can make you unpopular because.
Rick Scott just issued a list which included raise taxes on the poor and cut social security.
Good policy? Not important. Bad politics? Definetly!
That's why they don't do it.

Why is the "Republican Leadership" in Washington so quiet?
Repubs just need to come out this fall and say "notice how bad things have gotten in the last two years? That's what happens when Democrats run everything".

This^. It’s grand theater. They’re all drinking red liquor together and chasing skirt (or dudes) when they’re away from the spotlight.

Ehhh, I contend we are at a juncture that requires rather extensive proactive measures to overcome. I want to at least hear someone recognize that. I'd prefer them to say what they at least hope to to. I've heard neither really.

I didn't say otherwise, but by 98, Contract With America had been long forgotten and Newt was run off. House GOP had lost the fire to do anything other than bitch about Clinton (and impeach him)

I have little doubt that the Democrats will take a hit, but where is the leadership in those two bodies out front telling the American people their plan to combat all the crap that has been brought forth over the past two years?
They aren't going to start that type of full court press until late summer at the earliest. The average American is too stupid and society in general has too short of an attention span to start that now.
Nothing that happens before August or September matters.

Election shenanigans aside, the way Biden beat Trump was to sit in his basement saying little. When your opponent is beating himself do not give him an easy out by pushing him off the stage.
