DeSantis is running because he thinks he can win. The way Trump is running, I'm not sure DeSantis doesn't have a path.

I think it will be tighter than current polls reflect, but I also believe DeSantis will lose out in the end after an expensive, contentious primary, and that saddens me as I like them both and would love to see them not oppose each other.

Please elaborate. All I'm saying is that he's got a minimal chance this time around and would be the overwhelming favorite in 2028, so it's odd that he decided to run now when chance of victory is slim.

DeSantis was getting too MAGA. The establishment wing of the GOP wants to take him down and ruin him for 2028. He would have been a shoe in for 2028 but he couldn't resist the GOPe money for 2024. I understand. $200 million is a lot of money. Even if he makes a comeback for 2028 (which is doubtful) the establishment has him captured for the foreseeable future.

Where'd he get $200 million and what is it for?

Why do Trump supporters think that DeSantis losing the primary in 2024 means he has no chance in 2028?

I'm not saying no chance, but there is a certain stigma attached to being the loser that takes awhile to come back from. Can you name a primary runner up that was the candidate next time around?

Beyond that, Trump is brutal. He really shredded his opponents in 2016 and 2020 was fraudulent. I haven't seen Jeb Bush since. Only Cruz took a beating and managed to recover.

and the field is wide open in 2028 where DeSantis would be hugely favored.

As was said a few posts up. Clinton was the heavy favorite in 2008, Christie could've beat Romney in 2012,

Then look at early polling in 2008 for the GOP nomination. Guiliani was up 20% over McCain and Guiliani ended up with 0 delegates. You never know what's going to happen so if you think you can win you go for it.

Then explain Trump leading in the primary polls after losing a General Election to a dementia patient?

Clinton 2016 after losing in 2008, Romney 2012, Reagan 1980. McCain in 2008 after losing in 2000.

Yep.
I'm for Trump, schadenfreude, and salted earth in 2024.

But this Trump campaign feels very different than the others. Trump can be nasty. But in the past the nastiness always came in form of a counterattack. He'd layout a position. Someone would attack him, and he'd tear hell out of them in response. Great fun!

But this time he's been attacking DeSantis first, which is unseemly. Especially when RDD was undeclared.

Meanwhile, DeSantis is going after Biden, addressing his own gubernatorial accomplishments and issues, and mostly avoiding zinging Trump. If DeSantis picks up momentum, watch out. RDD absolutely has a path. Trump is giving it to him.

Because Donald frickING Trump cannot win a general election in this country, and the alternative is another year or so of Biden and then three years of Kamala frickING Harris.

Can DeSantis win in the general? I honestly don't know, but his chances are exponentially-higher than Trump.

The question is whether GOP primary voters are bright-enough to understand these maxims. I fear that the majority of them are not. They will allow their hero-worship to override any semblance of logic and analysis.
They may well give the nomination to Trump ... and that will give the general election to Biden.

I still believe the iconic status of Trump like him or not will be too much for DeSantis as his followers are ginormous in comparison to DeSantis.

I think Ron is running to get his name out to the public and get people to know who he. He isn't well known by many outside the state of Florida while most Americans know who Trump is.

What he is doing is good because once Trump is gone, he will have much greater support in 2028 and get most if not all the Trump votes.

This is the only sensible answer I've seen so far. A decent thought.

It's 2024 or bust for him.

Sucks for him, but sometimes fate doesn't give you easy paths
