At every iteration, he would move down a social class for support. He lost the educated, professional class at the outset, so he moved to the rural farmers for the GLF. That was an unmitigated disaster that caused 60-80 million deaths. He was exiled and regained his strength by appealing to the uneducated and the youth for the CR.

Is this a real question? Massive starvation due to ideological driven policies and the whole thing did not get China caught up and on track compared to other countries, they were further behind with millions dead.
