I still like Rand. The disappointment I have is that he knew this was the plan (tariffs) and he takes (R) money. He also likes to run to the media or let his voice known, which doesn’t help the plan. If that’s a win for him then he needs to leave the party.

I'm typically a Rand supporter, but I'm not sure why he's constantly talking about hypothetical trade theory when he knows that governments are preventing it from happening.

I'd hope that he would talk about free trade and maybe talk about how he might not agree with Trump's means but hopes that they result in truly free trade... something like that.

Instead he's giving Austrian Economics lessons in his interviews when he should know as well as the rest of us that the world doesn't act like that.

Is it real competition when using slave labor versus US wages, union or not?
From Ben Franklin to Edison and Tesla to Olds and Ford to Gates and Jobs, we don't need competition from genocidal communist countries.

I don’t know what goes down over there, MI, but I watched this documentary (could have been CCP propaganda) that showed young women that looked to be mid to late teens who left their poor dirt farms and lived in dorms, working 12 hr shifts. They sent the money back home to their families who were very grateful. And they did not seem to be unhappy or coerced, but grateful. Honest work from youth to adulthood does not seem to be either unethical or unwise, imo. Quite the contrary in today’s ‘entitlement’ culture. I had to get up a 4 in the morning, from age 4-5 and fill the feed buckets for my dad who hand milked the cows, and it ingrained a good work ethic in me that has been very useful and profitable. I have watched Docs where very young children must work for their families to survive, some very hard and dangerous and I pray that the coming tidal wave of High Tech can mitigate these hardships. Albeit any form of corporate pseudo child slave labor is an abomination and those who practice it should and will end up on the other side of the coin in their next life.

Define what you mean by slave labor.

Pretending you care about child labor in other countries is despicable. You don't care and have never cared.

GeauxBurrow312Whats your solution for the lower middle and working class? Just frick em? Look up marriage and child birth rates by class. We are quickly becoming a society where only the welfare queens and the top of the middle class + upperclass are having kids. Its not good for the country

Rands plan would screw over the entire middle class and leave behind a good bit of the country. He’s an empty suit.

I don't have problems with young people working, I grew up ranching and busted my arse from a young age. I did so because it was family.

Young girls making Nikes for pennies a day isn't the same thing. I know factually China using slave labor. Hell, they harvest organs from living "donors". What you saw was likely propaganda. The CCP places zero value on human life.

We should all aspire to have a society that works 12 hour shifts, lives in a tiny room with a roommate, eat cabbage and rice for every meal, and send the pittance leftover to our family who cant even afford the cabbage. To me, that is slave labor

There is no way to compete fairly against that. Especially when the corporation they work for is getting subsidies and protectionist regulations from their government.

Those of you against tariffs are clearly all about "me me me" - patriots you are not

China is using child labor and has no regard for their people. Countries like the U.S. cannot compete with this and it’s wrong and unethical. We are putting tariffs on these countries because that’s not what free trade is.

When did Canada and Europe start using child labor?

ETA I have stayed out of the tarrifs discussion because I don’t delude myself into knowing what the right answer is.

I also don’t delude myself into thinking that we are using them out of some fight against child labor.

That is fake news. When factory jobs became the norm post WW2, American workers were not living in tiny dorms with roommates and eating worse than modern college students

Count on your hands how many members of Congress spoke out against China's Covid policies.

Everyone knows, has known since day 1, that it was lab created and released, on purpose.

But damn if they'll ever admit it.

Rand Paul is compromised and uses his "libertarian" views to rationalize his positions. Want free trade? Then let's fight it out for free trade. Us laying down while they kick the shite out of us and steal our lunch money isn't free trade.

The Pauls are naive. They look at how we should act in a perfect world, and that is how they want the US to act regardless of the reality of the situation. They want the US to only act their way regardless of the outcome or actions of others. If the current situation isn't working to your benefit, then double down. You just have to free trade even harder. Your devotion to economic principles will surely persuade those taking advantage of you.

It's a very child-like approach to life. You have to almost be jealous of their innocence as we live in the dirty, ugly real world.
