Why do some nations get a pass on human rights abuses and others don’t?

Along with other abuses as well.

We sanction Iran and Syria, but turn a blind eye to Saudi Arabia.

We sanction North Korea, but turn a blind eye to China mowing down Muslims and political opponents.

We sanction Russia for cyber espionage, but turn a blind eye to China on this as well.

We get involved in Libya, Nigeria, etc but ignore what’s happening in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Why is this? Surely we aren’t hypocrites and don’t really give a frick about they do, and it’s all about money and geopolitical influence?

The Saudis were heading up the UN human rights commission until recently.

It’s ridiculous the amount of hypocrisy that exists in politics and world affairs.

Syria is vastly better on basic (Western) human rights.

At least someone has the right idea. Get them before they get you. There is no peaceful alternative.

Dont know much about the subject, but could it have anything to do with homogeneity?

If China is oppressing Chinese Muslims, not a big deal, but if it were another people, like Arab muslims, then it would be a big deal. Saudi's hate on Saudi's while the Iraq, Syrians and Iranians hate on other people (Sunni/Shites, kurds, Afgans or some shite) Israel/Palestian would be similar, but given a pass, so Idon't know, just throwing it out there.

uh yeah, obviously.

Saudi Arabia is a military ally. So it's OK.
We have an economic interdependence with China. So it's OK.
There was strategic importance to Libya. Not so with Zimbabwe/South Africa.

Also keep in mind you mention North Korean sanctions, but we've gone to war and toppled regimes not nearly as bad as North Korea. Even North Korea gets a pass, comparatively. After all, there's nothing Saddam Hussein did that North Korea hasn't done 1000x worse.

Military capability to inflict harm to civilian allies is VASTLY different Saddam and any of the desert peoples vs NK and SK.

NK could inflict massive civilian damage to SK before the US could really do much even with 30k troops stationed there on the border. And that's 30k AMERICAN lives immediately endangered also if TSHTF. 30k US troops vs 3 million NK ...not sure our weaponry can fire fast enough if they yell BANZAI! and charge en masse.

I always get a kick out of countries like Iran getting to chair the UN Human Rights Council.

Yeah, that's the point. We don't act simply on our principles, there are a bunch of other political and strategic factors at play in all of the above decisions
