yeah, so it's a bit easier for us...people who made modest livings wanted their fricking money back, do you blame them?

no. people are selfish and they want to suck at the teet

i just don't want them to get mad at me for accomplishing something they tried to do, but failed at (repealing SS)

we're not going to be the ones to end SS.

i don't think we really have to do anything. SS is going to collapse under the weight of the boomers, regardless

there is going to be an economic "death spiral" at some point, where there aren't enough workers making enough money to tax to fund SS/Medicare. part of that is the immense population of boomers (and our magical ability to extend life) and part is the economic shite storm that millenials face in the job market today. older people will work even longer and deprive the yoots of the ability to take those jobs, delaying their economic progress. it's exponential (and already occurring)

True.

Welfare redistributes wealth from the federal coffers to people.
Social Security redistributes wealth from people to the federal coffers.

The bigger problem is its all some people have, not a safety net its their sole source of income.

Remember when W was going to take a look at SS? I forget who but someone in his administration had the right idea. Immediate reform would scare people away so you set target dates down the road and grandfather people of a certain age into the old program. He got blasted for even thinking about it and dropped it.

you dont think these same people would have much preferred to invest & manage that money themselves rather than seeing it leak out of every paycheck over the last 50+ years?

Is it YOUR (my?) fault that they haven't done things like expand the retirement ages appropriately and curtailed and/or better policed things like SSI and Disability payments, that might keep it from being "failed"?

i honestly don't think the public has been nearly harsh enough in response to SS, especially once it was clear that it's doomed

it gets real personal, b/c people of our age don't want to call their parents freeloading welfare queens or take away the income they thought they'd have in retirement

No offense but if you're arguing with customers over their SSI I don't know if you're a big help on the sales floor.

I only do it to Trump supporters with bad credit before I kick them out. They love to discuss Trump so I just bait them in and tell them that he wants that welfare check back.

this is the same as the fricking ACA fricking over me to help subsidize older people

they had their ENTIRE lives, in booming economic times, to ensure this isn't true. now that they lived fat on the hog, i get punished for it? my economic future and ability to save/invest is slaughtered because they made sub-optimal decisions? that dog won't hunt

Just for clarification - "SSI" is an acronym for "Supplemental Security Income" (which is, actually, welfare because it is needs based - same rules as Medicaid AND not coupled to payroll contributions to an insurance fund).

Social Security (Retirement - "regular" Social Security), I believe is what you mean gets all the old folks riled up.

This had to be repeated.

Supplementary security income and social security disability (SSI and SSD) absolutely ARE welfare.

Social Security insurance is not.

They are three different programs all ran by the social security administration.

How is the Social Security DIB program welfare? You have to have paid into it long enough to receive a certain number of quarters of coverage and the amount you would receive is directly related to the amount you paid in.

SSI is absolutely welfare.

DAMMIT people read the thread and understand what each thing is an what it means!

SSD is NOT what most would consider welfare, it is disability insurance which is paid for as part of your SS payments. SSI is indeed pure welfare.

Social Security is really OASDI is the old age maintenance payments people get at 65 (or the other various ages)

I'm confused.

Is this thread about standard SS or SSI?
