100% this

quote:

He is applying Marquess of Queensberry Rules to a fight with Son of Sam.
and this

2 more things are worth mentioning

this "great deal" that Trump rejected:

* affirmed "chain migration", a no-go for Trump & gave an actual path to citizenship & voting rights
* gave the left what they wanted up front; yet spread wall funding over 10 years - we've seen this movie before...

lastly, Trump really could not draw the kind of hard line that he is today (IE - shutdown)

had he done so, we would have actually seen that "blue wave" progs had been fantasizing about

now that Trump has a "foil"; he can be tougher in his negotiation tactics

The rule can be changed

Yes it can. But generally only Democrats change the rules when they don’t like how the game is being played in the moment.

II was Harry “Instant Gratification” Reid that changed the 60 vote threshold on judicial nominees. Boy did that come back to viciously bite the libtards in the arse twice already! And there is a high probability that Ruth “Take a Nap” B. Ginsburg will make it thrice!

Republicans were infighting.

They also promised Trump would get the wall after the midterms before the end of the session. Then they didn’t give him the wall on that budget as promised. Result is the shut down.

Maybe if he didn’t have to spend every waking fricking moment defending himself from the rabid fricking press, Hollywood, Demwit politicians, deep state leakers, honest Bob, Creepy Porn Lawyer, never Trumper GOP... I could go on and on but you get the idea.
Remember also he also had Paul worthless piece of shite Ryan fighting him every step of the way as well.

He should have tried.

He didn't.

Alas, that changes literally nothing. It's a non-point.

Exactly

The only point is the lines would have been drawn before two years of media beat down would have happened.

It's called cloture. 60 votes needed. So you can have both houses and be a unable to pass anything.

Why don't liberals want to talk about why Obama didn't change immigration law and gun control when he had 60 votes? Hmmmmm....mkay.

You needs 60 votes in the Senate. The Democrats were blocking it.

the tax plan was passed under a continuing resolution which only required it to have a simple majority in the senate.

Thank you for making my point.

Republicans could have had the wall at any time by passing a bill through reconciliation, the same process they used to pass their deficit-exploding tax bill.

The fact that they didn't is proof that they had no desire to pass it.

take bills to reconciliation circumventing opposition's right by Senate rules to filibuster?

They did with the tax bill.

Why was tax breaks for the rich and corporate overlords more important than a 'national emergency'?

(because there isn't a national emergency at the border, except what Trump has created. Obviously)

He should have done it with the border bill as well.

Again ....

to be clear, you and I agree. I too wish McConnell would have brought the build-the-wall bill to reconciliation. Dems would have lowered the bar and gone nuclear if the shoe were on the other foot. No question. It is who they are. IMO, McConnell is a doddering fool in trying to maintain decorum with this group. He is applying Marquess of Queensberry Rules to a fight with Son of Sam.

Let's not pretend that he didn't because he couldn't - he did it solely because he didn't want to.

Because the border wall wasn't as important as tax breaks for corporations and the rich. Period, flat stop.

McConnell is doing what he can to preserve the Senate as a more contemplative body. That battle was lost with passage of obamacare. As with selection of judges, once the Genie is released, you cannot get it back into the bottle. McConnell is a fool to think otherwise.

Except when it comes to judges. On judges our Mitchy has been like Lawrence Taylor in overtime trying to get to his locker for a blast.

That is because Harry Reid changed the Senate rule. McConnell hopes that by continuing to screw Dems with their own device, they will eventually come around and restore old Senate rules. He is wrong. But that is his hope.
