re: Why are we congregating large groups of children in schools with our remote capabilities?

Why are we married to a 40 hour work week, and why don’t politicians talk about ways to increase our free time, considering our time is our most valuable asset?
Another thread topic where I will likely harvest downvotes

First, you could have led with this stuff, instead of preening like a smug little a-hole. I know all this. You're laying out Jr High level understanding of 'muh socialism' as if I, as if MOST people don't grasp the variations. I just pointed out the absurdity of equating roads to socialism. Try thinking it more as roads = civilization.
I'm pretty sure I know where this is leading, but whatever.

The same things were said during the Industrial Revolution. The government needs its citizens to be busy. We can't have too much leisure time or we might organize and rebel against the government.
David Grabor wrote an essay about bullshite Jobs that went viral, although he isn't as cynical as I am.
quote:
It’s as if someone were out there making up pointless jobs just for the sake of keeping us all working. And here, precisely, lies the mystery. In capitalism, this is precisely what is not supposed to happen. Sure, in the old inefficient socialist states like the Soviet Union, where employment was considered both a right and a sacred duty, the system made up as many jobs as they had to (this is why in Soviet department stores it took three clerks to sell a piece of meat). But, of course, this is the sort of very problem market competition is supposed to fix. According to economic theory, at least, the last thing a profit-seeking firm is going to do is shell out money to workers they don’t really need to employ. Still, somehow, it happens.

Now I am agreeing with you.
Spot on.

Yeah, this wouldn’t be a popular thread.
My tinfoil-hat side suspects the sudden “omg socialism” push from the techno-right stems from a fear that people will want AI to be a public utility rather than a private enterprise.
That discussion is coming sooner rather than later, IMO.

We will have to agree to disagree. Most of anything that government is involved in amounts go some level of a jobs program in my estimation.
Does that make private schools a jobs program also?

What wouldn't be considered a jobs program?

Easier to discipline for performance at a private school, no?

Legit question. Every place of employment could be considered some sort of private sector "jobs program"

The issue here is so many households with two parents working. Can’t leave kids home by themselves

It’s interesting to note that Henry Ford is who really brought the 40-hr work week to the mainstream.
He had an affinity for certain national socialists…

Except the private sector generally has to make a profit,
TSA does not have to make a profit. Neither does your local government school. I argue the more money they spend the more successful they believe themselves to be.

Yes
The public sector by definition can't make a profit
That doesn't mean that all public jobs are of no value
ETA - and you might be underestimating the amount of private donations that help fund private schools.

Is doxxing what you call it when someone profiles you so accurately, you feel naked in your own home?
Posted on 10/17/26 at 12:56 pm to weagle1999
That is the difference though. Certain things shouldn’t really expected to turn a profit.
Fundamentally, things you need to exist are first on my list to assess whether or not it should be public or private.
Looking at things like electricity: is it something people need to function on society? Yes. Next step: can competition reasonably exist? Not really. So, this is something that could be entirely publically owned.
Now housing: people need it, but there is reasonable expectation of competition. This should remain private. Go on down the list.

Consider this: When is the last time a government school heralded that they were spending less per student by increasing efficiency? I have only heard ‘spending more per student’.
Even if they can’t turn a profit, they appear to have no interest in spending less, which to me smacks of job protection.

My view on this is different. We could do a really deep dive on this statement

You're unsurprisingly worried about the wrong shite
What you should be concerned with is the value of the product they're producing and not the cost

I have seen the product they are producing and found it lacking.
And why the veiled insult? I haven’t been combative with you.
