Why are we congregating large groups of children in schools with our remote capabilities?

Seems like we could transition over to a pods type learning system with remote instruction and eliminate large groups of children massed in ‘gun free zones’. This could reduce the number of teachers needed as well.

Maybe large schools are as much a jobs program for adults and as they are institutions to provide instruction

But socialization. Kids developed social skills years ago with many small schools, which was similar to the pod concept.

I personally agree with you that schools aren’t really needed anymore with technology other than socialization but let’s be honest public school / elementary education is more so day care until adulthood.

The bigger question is why are taxpayers still funding universities in growing bloated administrative roles and infrastructure other than to maintain? Privatization would lead to more innovation imo but that goes back to who funds it.

It is an interesting debate as public education remains the same with worse results by not adapting into the future for 99% of it.

You people obviously don't have kids.

The argument of ‘class sizes are too large’ is really about ‘we want more members for the teachers’ unions’.

You obviously love the socialist side of public education which is very remedial.

I guess you aren't aware of the learning tosses that happened when schools went virtual because of covid.

have you tried to sit a 5 year old in front a computer to learn how to read?

kids need socialization, exercise and enrichment every day. they also benefit from eyes on them to look for signs of abuse and neglect. many kids only eat at school, or get medical care at school.

No, those two points are ridiculous.

To bring remote capabilities into this would mean that WAY more parents that currently work remotely would then have to work remotely in order to be home. It was "easier" to do during Covid when the government sent everyone home and companies were shamed for trying to force people to the office. There's no way you could scale that today.

The argument that schools are a "jobs" program is just silly.

Now, if he wanted to make the argument that what is taught and how it is taught needs to be changed, then fine. But the two points I laughed at are just that - laughable.

You are free to home school your kids. There are plenty of private schools in the United States. Public education isn't the only option.

There are already virtual schools for people who would prefer to keep their kids sitting in front of a computer.

Not the responsibility of government IMO.

What's the average class size at the school your kids attend?

so you want to abolish public education? that makes more sense than replacing it with virtual school.

If you divide all the large schools into smaller schools you'll need more teachers which would create a teacher shortage. Teacher pay would have to go up. None of these are bad things but they can't happen overnight.

we should consider forcing everyone to stay home for their own safety! people can get food and groceries delivered and work remotely.

Is it not? Teachers who never leave a classroom, whose education is funded by the taxpayers, who then have a salary that is paid for by the taxpayers. The government dictates the curriculum and requirements that rarely never change and are remedial year after year, while having tax payer facilities with set meal plans. Idk how much more socialist it could be.

We will have to agree to disagree. Most of anything that government is involved in amounts go some level of a jobs program in my estimation.

Pick any of your local government schools. With the right blending of technology certain jobs could be eliminated, yet people would fight against that for some reason.

Heck, self driving capabilities could likely eliminate bus drivers now if we were bold enough to try it.

I am against government schools, yes. But don’t see them going away in my lifetime.

We tried this over COVID and the results were detrimental to a whole generation of kids, many of whom still haven't caught up.
