re: Why are we congregating large groups of children in schools with our remote capabilities?

Keep going, you’re almost there! Just a quick re-assessment of your point and you’ll get it.

Liberals solution to crime is always for law abiding citizens to surrender their freedom. Should we also stop congregating at restaurants and sporting events? So your solution to shootings is for us to never leave our homes?
I’m just tossing ideas out there. Most of us don’t think government schools are working well so why not talk about scenarios?
Why are elected officials, judges, etc. more secure when they are at work than kids when they are in a school?

kids need socialization, exercise and enrichment every day. they also benefit from eyes on them to look for signs of abuse and neglect. many kids only eat at school, or get medical care at school.
These are social worker arguments for public education. Not serious arguments.

I picture you as a teacher that got some soft degree online that qualified you to move into administration and now you sit in an office with a slot machine and the kids come in and pull the lever to get diagnosed with a fake learning disability that gets them a welfare check

I can appreciate the thought exercise. I presumed it was a serious argument.

Isn't doxing against the rules here?

Here, I’ll help you out:
1. Government funded projects are, by definition, a form of socialism
2. Having government services doesn’t make you a “socialist government”
It’s a good thing for the Romans that people “rendered unto Caesar” what was Caesar’s, so they could fund their empire.
All communism is socialism. Not all socialism is communism.

4cubbies, I agree with you on all this.

I wish whatever kid I’m putting through school would come cut my grass every now and then but he’d probably steal something

If we were starting from zero and establishing a government education system from scratch today, would it look like what we have now given our 21st century technology? Or could we leverage that technology to improve efficiency and increase safety?

Technology presents its own dangers.

Same question to you:
Would you create the government system we have in place today from scratch, or would you try and streamline it with our modern technology?
Maybe, just maybe, the education system is like car dealerships and wants an antiquated model in order to provide job security.
And maybe our elected officials are unwilling to discuss beneficial change in order to keep voters happy.

Now this is a good thread topic. You could ask this about almost any industry today.
Honestly, almost every part of society should be dismantled and rebuilt once AI and associated technology reaches a certain level of maturity.

It's hard to re-imagine the education system. My instinct is to say we should return to practices in place during "the good ole days" when our education was superior. But society has devolved in so many ways since then that I'm not sure we can even do that.
I am a proponent of local control of schools.

Teach more, standardized test less would be a fantastic start

I guess you aren't aware of the learning tosses that happened when schools went virtual because of covid.
have you tried to sit a 5 year old in front a computer to learn how to read?

You can’t really meaningfully re-imagine it without re-imagining what it means to exist in a modern society.
You can tweak it but consider: what would it look like if Bezos is right and people will only need to work 2-3 days a week? What if we have a UBI? What if the “daycare” aspect of public education is not as necessary for a functioning society?
Lots of questions with no answer just yet.
