re: Why are the top 10 most poverty stricken states "red states"?

Most of the poorest counties in those states all vote Democrat. What makes those states red is the experience people have from dealing with the population making up those poor democrat counties.

Maybe some people like it that way.
Who are you to impose your ways on others?

Freedom does not have a dollar sign attached to it. I would rather be free and poor than rich and live under tyranny.

Does this factor in cost of living?
40k a year for a family in Mississippi is different from 40k in California.

Georgia is a blue state and Kentucky and Louisiana have Dem govs

Yet CA receives one-third of the nation's welfare money.
San Diego Union-Tribune
Suck on that.

These states aren't as poor as you think they are because the cost of living is much cheaper here
Exactly. You can't just look at income. $150k a year will buy you a one room rat infested apartment in Manhattan. But it will buy you a house, 2 cars and a picket fence in the south.
Everything is RELATIVE. You can't compare income between states in absolute terms. Doesn't work. You have to factor in cost of living.

California does have the highest poverty rate in the nation, according to a Census Bureau report.
Posted on 9/2/21 at 1:15 pm to finchmeister08
These Census studies are awful and ignore a lot of factors by oversimplifying things in some ways and convoluting them in other ways.
They ignore services provided by the government and entitlements.
They then use the same threshold for all locations irrespective of cost of living and local inflation.
That alone proves why this is crap. Further, ignoring demographics is a huge problem.

rural areas are more poverty stricken that inner cities.
And less crime stricken?
All of this is an interesting phenomenon. Some have claimed the red state/blue state poverty ratios, particularly Deep South states, are residual effects of post Civil War Reconstruction, a harsh, punitive Federal occupation, and intentional economic and cultural suppression by victorious northeastern interests.
Your’s is an interesting observation and question.

Didn't really realize California is only 36% white.
More hispanic than white.
More hispanic than white.

Your stats don't include cost of living. The South actually fairs much better when this is taken into account. I'm pretty sure California is number 1, and the top 5 are mostly blue states when this is considered.

I would like to point out that this is another opportunity to point out to liberals that states don't vote people do.
One reason Lily white areas of the country are so liberal is because they have no f****** idea of the consequences of their idiotic policies because they don't have to live with them.
As such you get a bunch of whiny liberals who think they are experts at dealing with something they've never experienced. Meanwhile in the states filled with the results of liberal policies you get a very entrenched conservative majority to see firsthand every day the stupidity of liberal policies.
We can't help the fact that 30% of our population give or take is utterly useless and that 30% pretty much votes for your dumb asses. Fortunately we outnumber them still

By the time these states were through with reconstruction efforts designed to penalize them....it was too late to build a viable working class. They remain reliant on agriculture, which became more mechanized and require less labor.
So they got fricked by their own government.
And FYI - Louisiana's governor is Democrat, along with the mayors of all of the largest cities in that state.
