The expanding borders of NATO were always going to be a source of conflict.

How so? Were they doing military exercises at the borders to intimidate Russia? Was Poland hiding nukes or did we denuclearize them? Doesn't even seem like they have enough weapons to defend their own country...... What exactly was the threat here?

As if 'sovereignty' matters. Come on man, Iraq and Afghanistan laugh at your concern.

As do Panama and Grenada.

Joining NATO is not the same as being invaded. And another country joining NATO certainly doesn't mean yours is invaded.

So you don't /didn't support JFK in the Cuban missile crisis?

No way we’d tolerate that.

Having a former KGB guy lead Russia is an existential threat to former Soviet countries. Should they tolerate it?

Just imagine thinking this is a relevant talking point, much less a rebuttal

Russia conducting foreign policy as if it were still the 1960’s is exactly what caused this mess.

Sweet lord.

Yes, a voluntary association is the same as invading.

Was Putin afraid he might accidentally join NATO?

Did the countries that join NATO become puppet states?

The random stupidity of this board, I swear.

Even better, Putin wanted to join NATO when he first took office.

Had Ukraine joined NATO and we loaded up a bunch of nukes and missiles at their border I'd be a little more understanding.

Please keep in mind we didn't add the Ukraine to NATO and they weren't showing any signs of preparing to attack Russia....

Oh look another irrelevant attempt at rebuttal.

That the US has wrongfully invaded other nations has no bearing on whether what Russia is doing is wrong. No one on this board was involved with the decision to invade Vietnam, Iraq x2, Afghanistan, Panama, Grenada, or any of the others. Nor is anyone on this board, or the American government, beholden to the rationale used by the US in those decades-old conflicts.

Quit with the revisionist, Reddit-quality edgelord one-liners already.

Yuge mistake on Clinton and W’s part to alienate Putin in those early days. Much like OP and others in this thread, they were simply too caught up in Cold War dynamics to make a rational decision.

We will, one day, need Russia when it comes to fighting China, and the past 20+ years of American foreign policy has made that eventual alignment of interests against the Chinese more painful than it had to be.

That said the tantrum the Russians have thrown in those last two decades have not made it any easier either.
