It's the Russians...nothing they've done recently makes much sense.

Why, it's aLmost like we're not getting an accurate picture of what they're doing and what we're doing.

Sections of the pipelines lie at a depth of around 80-110 metres
Understood, but the surface ships would be seen as loitered. It could be a sub with a small submersible, and not many countries have those.
My point centers around the sosus listening system because we already know who is going where.

Whoever did this had little confidence that Germany would keep their sanctions against Russian gas.

Maybe, but there are few suspects with the capability to do what appears to have happened.

Was probably done via submarine. That makes 5 candidates that could realistically pull it off:

United States
Russia
United Kingdom
France
China

A Chinese attack boat in the Baltic would certainly attract attention. That's a long way from home, and they usually don't operate that far out. That makes them unlikely.

With heightened tensions, you know NATO is doing constant anti-sub ops looking for Russian boats. So it's possible that they could have done it, but I find it near impossible that they could operate in the Baltic undetected. Keeping track of their boats is basically 75% of the job of NATO's North European assets.

That leaves the US, UK, and France. France sells excess nuclear-driven electricity to their neighbors, so that's a possible motivation. But the most likely perps are the US or UK. And I have a hard time believing the UK would do this on their own.

That leaves us. Motive. Opportunity. Technology to accomplish. All in our bag right now.

There is zero doubt it was the U.S. Russia would simply turn the pipeline off if they wanted it shut down - they wouldn't blow it up. And China doesn't care one way or the other.

Could be a Euro country, but if they did it, they almost certainly were working with the U.S. So the U.S. is involved in either case.

I think it's pretty reckless. While I don't give a shite about Russia, I don't want to end up in a war with them. If some country destroyed our pipelines, we would consider it an act of war.

I think it's pretty clear that our government/ intelligence community/ military want a hot war with Russia. Not sure if it's the military-industrial complex driving the bus, or if the politicos want to lead us into a "patriotic" war in the hopes of avoiding a bloodbath in the midterm elections. But we have some very irresponsible people running things right now, who don't seem to have any idea how badly a hot war in or over Ukraine could get out of hand.

Biden did it.

You think Putin has his eye on anyone else after Joe Biden threatened this action?

The U.S. or a group of nations including the US. The tactical upside is that the US can now prevent Germany from caving on the sanctions against Russia so that the US can maintain its proxy war on Russia using the Ukraine and the EU as expendable assets.

the area in the damaged pipeline is about 240 feet deep. Recreational divers can go about 110 foot deep with one tank and no decompression. Two tanks, air additives , and staged decompression allow sufficient time for attaching a demolition charge for recreational divers

this is not a hi tech event.
You can buy commercial drone cameras that list at $2500 that can reach 300 feet. Seems like you can buy a $20,000 drone that could carry some payload and drop it on the pipeline within an hour. I don't think anyone would notice it and it could be any type of personal / commercial boat.

At that low tech, could we rule out private companies, like a competing LNG provider or someone shorting Gazprom?

The US is the only country that’s capable of having divers put explosives on a pipe?
