I have a friend whose grandmother (who I'm close with) uses the term oriental. Here's the thing that will blow the SJW mind........ she's Vietnamese.

I'd love to see the look on some white SJW phags face when she uses that term.

You must say Asian.

This is not some hot JAloPeno revelation.

It will bring you GOOd Karma.

Don't try to slant the story.

Just nip it in the bud.

Racists will tell you otherwise, but that is the chink in their racist armor.

All Asian ... all the time.

So many well-read, informed politics board users but no mention of Edward Said.

Have you baws not read Said?

My Japanese grandmother still refers to people as Oriental as an adjective, but not as a noun.

I.E. "those people are Oriental."

not

"look at those Orientals"

It’s been considered racist to call an Asian person “oriental” since forever.
The word itself is not considered racist.

I was given "Orientalism" by a close friend that was very excited about it. At some point in Chapter 2 I realized it was all about telling me how to think. I put it down and didn't pick it back up. I just want the facts so I can make my own mind up about how to think.

But here are some facts:

We are being told to use the term "Asian" instead of the culturally insensitive term, "Oriental".

Use of the term "Oriental" reveals the bias of the Westerner, pointing out someone is from East of some standard shows a western bias.

"Orient" derives from a Latin word meaning "East".

"Asia" derives from a Phoenician word meaning...

..."East".

Japan self-identifies as the "Land of the Rising Sun".

The sun rises...

...in the East.

The Prime Meridian divides the planet into East and West zones. Countries furthest west of the PM include the United States and Canada. Countries furthest east of the PM include Australia, Papua New Guinea and Japan.

Australians like being referred to as "Southerners".

About twenty years ago when I still watched Real World, one of the chicks on there was Asian and said the difference was oriental referred to something to do with things (rugs, etc) while Asian was a place of origin.

Consider the source.

I dunno.

True. At least in common American usage nowadays.

What if that Chinaman has never been to the USA....he can't be Asian-American if he still lives in China or moved to England?

Oriental is latin.
It literally means Eastern. Just as negro in latin means black.

Preferential reference to the group as "Asians" is particularly odd given the fact that Indians and Russians are most assuredly Asian too.
