"Murder on the Asian Express" ???

To answer your question ... oriental became racist right about the time that we decided that there is no difference between a person from Eastern Russia and a person from Southern China.

They are exactly alike ... and YOU WILL recognize this fact.

Whenever white liberals started feeling outrage over the use of the word.

The Orient at one point referred to east of Europe.

I.e. the Orient Express, which went from London to Constantinople.

I think in the UK and Canada they still use oriental to describe Chinese/Japanese etc. Asian usually means Indian/Pakistani to them.

In British English usage, the term Asians usually refers to people with roots in South Asia, essentially the Indian subcontinent.

In British English, the term Oriental is sometimes used to refer to people from East and Southeast Asia (such as those from China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Mongolia and Laos). "Asian" in the United Kingdom generally refers to people from South Asia (in particular Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Maldives)

I had no idea this was a racist phrase until about 6 months ago. Snowflake looked at me like I said the N word simply mentioning the word.

Can we take a vote and make honky, redneck and the like racist?

Back in the day it was merely Chink.

Oriental used to be used for all those far eastern countries, islands included.

I'm pretty sure it was a term used to refer to people from a certain region of the world long before anyone thought to deem it "racist."

this is a weird one for me as well. i said it a year ago and got blasted. apparently Asian is preferred so i stick with that.

i think (just using examples) chink, jap, g**k, sl*** eye, or other things are WAAAAAYYYY worse, but i digress.
