Kill bad guys and break stuff. Every modern war devolves into a door-kicking in phase. Until the T1000s are ready, humans still have to do that.

Also, dudes with guns and materiel can still perform in most any environment, even if some kind of cyber attack cripples all of our fancy smart weapons and such.

The Marines are also unique in that they are basically a multi-modal expeditionary force, with their own "air force" etc. People pick on Marines (not to their face), but they have a unique way of doing things that's pretty bad arse.

And deterrence is still worth a lot in this world. Think about what it would be like to be a British citizen right now, with Putin just tea-bagging your navy 20 miles offshore.

Peace through strength.

It’s needed as an occupying force. Modern warfare will be fought with drones. It already is

If our defense was left solely to the Air Force and the Navy we’d be so fricked, lol.

God bless both services, but they are mostly transportation and boom boom support. There are exceptions to every rule, but without marines and the army, we’d be very fricked.

they are needed if you want to totally defeat another nation into submission. As you’re seeing with Iran, the Air Force and Navy can’t force regime change and occupy a country until a transition plan is set up. should only be used in World War type situations.

the other use case is to defend the homeland. no matter how much technology advances, occupying land is the only way to preserve sovereignty.

As I said in my original post, no one in office is going to deploy ground forces again because of the political stigma associated with it.

As true now as when it was said in the 70’s.

serious question

I would have dropped about 10,000 military animatronic dogs or in this case make them pigs with the ability to shoot ... that sort of sounds like the future of wars.

I do not see any other wars with china or russia because of nukes and they are not invading us and we are not invading china. Our future lies in destroying muslims.

I for one am ok if we use boots on the ground sparingly and not in every little dust up. I do hope we maintain a force to fill those boots on a moments notice when needed though.

The world is terrified of a "boots on the ground" wars......so we invest trillions in laser guided bombs and new unmanned long-range technology.

Russia and Ukraine are the outliers here....they playing old school!....and it prolly will be the last war fought in the trenches.

So we will continue to fight wars, but mainly from the air....and people still die.

Deploying troops now automatically equals an electoral wipeout. No party is going to try it even though it is necessary for our objectives in war.
That's only true if the decision is unpopular, dummy. If you can’t convince your own population that deploying ground troops is necessary, the weakness is in the case for the war, not in the people you’re trying to convince.

People keep saying “tech will end ground combat,” but that assumes the other side quits once their systems are degraded. That’s not how it works. When high-end capability gets stripped away, armies don’t disappear, they regress. They fight with whatever’s left. At the bottom of that ladder is a rifle and a body on the ground.

Technology changes how wars start and how efficiently you can destroy things. It doesn’t eliminate the need to physically control space. And the moment that becomes the objective you’re back to ground combat whether anyone likes it or not.

Should be the same purpose as the rest of the military; national defense

And none of that national defense should involve invading Iran
