What would you like to see from the next Louisiana Governor?

Serious question--let's talk policy. I will begin:
1) Pass a bill creating a special police district and court system for New Orleans. One that, you know, actually prosecutes crime. The judges will be appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate. The prosecutor will be appointed by the governor, and will actually do his job.
2) Clean out the university administration. Immediate bans on all DEI programs as well as bans on ANY admissions quotas. By law, only grades and standardized test scores can be considered.
3) A massive public works program to fix every road, and this includes every single street in NOLA.
4) A state employment law banning racial discrimination. Allow for a successful plaintiff to receive treble damages.
5) Tort reform. This would significantly lower insurance premiums and curtail frivolous lawsuits.
6) Real pursuit of economic development, however difficult this may be.

1) go to other states that are doing well.
2) compare to what Louisiana is currently doing.
3) start doing what other states are doing
4) stop doing Louisiana things that other states that do well aren’t doing.

Don't waste time on fights and worthless legislation in an attempt to get attention.
Do the boring work that actually yields effective policy.

Get rid of the massive bureaucracy in the department of education in Baton Rouge. Let each Parish keep the property tax they collect and improve teacher pay and make improvements to the schools. I have never found one teacher that says they have gotten any help from the Dept of Education in Downtown BR.

A constitutional convention that fundamentally shifts the balance of power and funding away from the governor’s office and down to parish governments and the legislature. Part of this process would eliminate the income tax, inventory taxes, and state corporate taxes.
A complete restructuring of DOTD, likely shifting road maintenance responsibilities on most of its mileage to parish and city governments. That way, DOTD’s focus is only on the biggest and most important highways and bridges, and can be given adequate funding to accomplish that mission.
An end to police departments being funded by their activities rather than by dedicated millages. Police departments should never be concerned about revenue when deciding which laws to enforce.
Lower the petition threshold for recall elections and ballot initiatives.
Full legalization of recreational marijuana, including home grow.
A massive reduction in occupational licenses and activities requiring a permit.
Constitutional carry including no more need for a license to concealed carry.
Reforms to make curriculum decisions in public schools more transparent and accountable to voters. It should be an easily answerable question to ask who was responsible for ______ being taught in our schools. These decisions should be made as locally as possible.
Raise TOPS standards to a 24 on the ACT and a 2.75 GPA. In addition, where there is a cap on total TOPS awards, have those caps be distributed by major, and those caps determined by workforce need. Thus, students may be encouraged to pursue fields that are more in demand and become more competitive in fields with fewer employment prospects.
Consolidate redundant higher-ed programs and better align secondary and cc educational programs with workforce needs.
Never allow any student who cannot read to pass 4th grade. Introduce remedial programs modeled off of MS to get deficient students literate.
Reduce English lit requirements in high school to create more time for courses on basic life skills like balancing a checkbook, paying taxes, building credit, scheduling doctors’ appointments, insurance, parenting, etc.
Streamline and centralize all sales tax collections. All sales taxes will be included in the prices of retail goods on in-person store shelves.
Standardize court costs, procedures, and fees across all state courts. Higher level courts can charge more, but all courts at the same level will charge the same.
Standardize bail across all criminal courts so that jurisdictions like New Orleans and EBR cannot be a revolving door charging ridiculously low bail for defendants charged with violent crimes.
Create a mechanism whereby the state attorney general can press charges in a criminal proceeding when a District Attorney refuses to do so. The AG may not force a local DA to drop charges.
Standardize rewards for common personal injuries in civil suits. Juries can still decide the amount based on the individual facts of the case, but they should be given ranges.
End traffic stops for offenses which do not require jailing the offender. Those offenses should instead be a citation.
Eliminate “I smell weed” as a justification for establishing probable cause to search without a warrant.
Audit school libraries for explicitly sexual material and age restrict that material so that it is only accessible by those who have achieved the required maturity. These decisions should be transparent to the public.
Reform how hotels and air bnb’s are regulated.
In the event civil asset forfeiture is initiated, if charges are dropped or defendant is found “not guilty” all property must be returned to defendant without need of any more proceedings initiated by defendant.

Not run the state like a fricking circus.
Posted on 3/14/23 at 4:25 pm to TIGERHOLD
I don't have the time to write everything but:
1) pass Constitutional Carry
2) fix and address the damn infrastructure/roads
3) whatever it takes to address insurance and lower premiums
4) please address violent crime and DA's who do not prosecute offenders.
I know this isn't all on just the Governor but Louisiana needs help with these issues top to bottom.

1 and 2 would be tops on my list if I still lived there.

Infrastructure. Particularly large scale highway and flood protection.
Like a new Mississippi River bridge, the Lake Charles bridge replacement, widening I-10, a West Bank turnpike, the Darlington Reservoir, and finally finishing 45.

End homestead exemption so law abiding citizens can buy up blighted properties at the sheriffs sale

Nah. City streets are city problems.
But there are a lot of shitty state and federal highways in New Orleans that need work. And widening I-10 all the way to Baton Rouge should be a priority.

I don’t think y’all understand how much a force for evil homestead exemption is
If it ended today we would have streets of gold in like 3 years

Oh lord.
If Louisiana tried to property tax like Texas , Virginia or Tennessee or toll road like Florida and Texas or register cars like Connecticut and Oregon this place would revolt.
Louisiana can never be like other states because people want things for free and not to be inconvenienced.
