What would be the ultimate punishment for murder to make people think twice about it?

I say torture them every single day for the rest of your life.
Imagine if all convicted murderers were tortured every day for the rest of their lives.
Waterboarded. Electrical shock. Beatings. Breaking bones. Smashing toes and fingers.
Would this deter murder?
Any ideas?

Just make it against the law, that will stop it from happening

Given the severity of the punishments that already exist, I don't think a person who is willing commit murder is going to suddenly be deterred by something more exteme.

But what kind of sick frick would want that job? We could go back to public hangings or even firing squads. It could all be automated so an actual person wouldn't be killing someone. We could also go back to when prisoners performed hard labor.

Has there ever been a study that has shown that the worse the consequences for murder, the more it reduces it?
Honestly asking.

For most murderers nothing would deter them, they do not value like, yours or theirs. the murderers that plan their actions ahead of time are few , for most their decision to kill someone was made 5 seconds before they did it with no thought as to what would happen to them later. This is my opinion, and that of several local prosecuting attorneys I talk to that actually deal with these types of people.

I actually thought about this as I was writing the OP.
I also thought, "What country has the lowest murder rate, and why?

If I accidentally bump into someone and "have words" and they will kill me for it, it is actually worse than premeditated murder.

In the latest Hardcore History podcast, Carlin pointed out that prior to the modern era, death was not the punishment in a public execution. Death was the side effect of the torture, and the torture was the punishment that the public witnessed.
For example, hanging back then wasn’t as “civilized” as society eventually made it. Hangings were strangulations that took several minutes. Smart people eventually worked those out to be instant neck-breakings (most of the time).

The kind of people that commit mass shootings. Kill two birds with one stone.

Seriously, though, I support this. Those people need to be forced to do something for the good of the country.

If they are truly mentally ill, nothing will deter them.

I would bet money it’s a very homogeneous country that places an extremely high value on family and education.
