FWIW, some of the best teachers I had in grade school were males. 8th grade math, and physics and biology in high school. They were very good at their jobs.
eta- It was over two decades ago. Maybe it makes a difference.

4. Former athletes that just want to coach kids in sports, but are forced to teach history or health too.

Worse, how about sociology? I had a first year PE coach who was forced to teach a semester of sociology. He was told just to stick to the text book.
Him: 'Turn to chapter 4. It's about martial relations.'
Zach: 'Coach, is that about husbands and wives going to war?'
Him: 'WHAT?'
Zach: 'Perhaps you mean 'marital relations.'
Him (realizing his mistake): 'Zach, someday somebody is gonna whip your arse.'
Everybody cracked up. We had a good time in class learning nothing.

They will be sent to office and, because they have an IEP that says it’s just in their nature to be a piece of shite kid, they will be returned to the classroom to repeat the cycle until they behave so egregiously that they get a 3-5 day suspension. The class gets a brief respite and the process begin again.
This has been our experience with our kids…The “ special needs” kids ironically are the bullies these days because they know they can get away with it.

The teachers in Louisiana have been shite for at least 75 years. My mother has told me stories from back then. Culture goes back way further than most people know and that includes the teachers.
ETA: Talking about public and not private teachers.

Sorry, I disagree.
You can disagree all you want. There’s ~4M teachers (k-12) in the US. There’s 1M doctors (I’m being generous and not pointing out how many of those doctors aren’t seeing patients).
The economics of the two demographics will never match.

I've thought about doing it as a retirement gig from 60-70. I could basically teach and business or finance course.
Problem is they'd have to pay me about $140K just to even consider the headache.
If you want to make real impact, get better teachers. Pay top dollar.
I thought teachers had state insurance but apparently thats not always the case. Some have terrible insurance in these small parishes.

It is people like you who keep having an attitude like this about the teaching field that is a large part of the problem.

My son wants to be an Ag teacher. I'm trying to talk him out of it.

frick that. Teachers should be getting paid less and taxes should be going down. They are already making a killing as it is.
And I bet you often bitch about the state of education in our country.

What do you think conservative women in southern colleges are majoring in?

I’ve always thought of teaching once I’m done with my professional career and have my retirement in my pocket. I figure that when I’m older and “retired,” teaching may be a good route to make extra cash. Wouldn’t consider doing it as life long career because of the pay

My two cents:
After graduating college and getting married, I chose to work until the kids were born. I stayed home until they went to school then got my teaching certification so that I could still spend time with them in the summers and holidays. It used to be a great job for educated moms and I loved it….back then.
This is just my experience as a public school teacher, but I have never indoctrinated any kids into any ideology and nor have I known a teacher that does this. Personally, even if I wanted to, there simply was not enough time in the day to teach curriculum, deal with disrespectful and unruly kids, collect mandatory data for administrators and grade tests and homework. I don’t know what goes on in these classrooms with a teacher with an ideological angle. They can’t possibly be teaching.
That being said, I don’t know who in their right mind would go into teaching today. Parents and kids run the schools, you literally CANNOT fail any kid, no matter how many tests they fail, no matter how many days absent. Kids stay on their phones in class and curse at you if even try to take it. Parents literally think their kids do no wrong and no one gives a shite about learning because they know they pass no matter what.there is no discipline.
This was my last semester because it was just too pointless. Going in a different direction now that mine are grown. Thankful to be in a position to be getting out.
One example, I have a child that has come to school a total of 18 days last year. She has come 5 days this year. She will keep passing. Mom thinks it’s cool that she stays home with her and CPS does nothing. There is no reason for her to not be in school but she does what she wants. It looks bad on teachers but our hands are tied.
If you think the next generation is gonna be bad, you’re right. And they will be taking care of us. Education needs an overhaul for sure and a serious narrative about neglectful parents needs to be had. They need to be held accountable for the kids they are putting out into the world.
