I think a lot of people feel it in terms of their own mortality.
When someone you feel like you "know" signs off, it makes you look in the mirror and realize it could be you.

I am sorry for him and his daughter, family, and close friends. But it is just another going through the trials and tribulations of life. Said a little prayer for them, and on to other things. All the brouhaha will be way out of proportion relevant to things that are really important. Can someone say, Coronavirus, Democrats destroying the Constitution, focus!!!!

That makes it so much worse of an accident, as well as the other individuals the died. My question was about KB only.
I will tell you like this.
When Lindbergh's kid was kidnapped, was that a relevant event?

In all seriousness. I think that when someone prominent dies that people grew up watching, they feel it somewhat personally for some reason.
I may have forgot to carry the 1...
But yes, people deify celebs, especially athletes, and so it’s harder to image they are mortal. Probably other things at play but that’s likely why people react in such disbelief and incredulity.

I was a highly unpopular dude in my circle when Princess Di died and I basically mocked the ABSURD over reaction to her death.
Personally, I get it. If you followed them, you "feel" their death. But for frick's sake, if you personally find yourself in deeper grief when a celeb dies than if your neighbor does, it's time to do some self-examination.

It's irrelevant to me. Feel sorry for those left behind to mourn the kids that dies but Kobe wasn't anyone who touched my life and added meaning.
Social media is a shitshow right now.

The best way to estimate what most Americans think is to project your feelings and your opinions onto everyone else and then throw a little identity separatism on top. Works every time 5% of the time.

What does relevant mean?
Most people don’t experience death everyday in anyway.
Even thought people don’t know these celebrities you remember seeing them play or their movies, and you feel somewhat connected. When they die out of the blue it reminds us of our own mortality.

Died with his 13 year daughter.
I have more sorrow for the daughter. Kobe lived a great life. The daughter lost hers too early. Sadly the other children will grow up without their father.
The MSM is disgusting.

Dude was 41, that’s too frickin’ early, too, in my book!

Certainly a tragic event made even worse by death of his daughter and her teammate.
It is not relevant to me, as my life is affected in no way. I certainly wish it did not happen....just as I wish two American firefighters who helped in Australia had not died in plane crash.

The mind probably thinks there is a slither of hope before they die during the crash.

Relevant?
In what way?
Most of what happens in the world outside my home; my family, friends, work, community is not really relevant to me on a personal level. But, that doesn’t mean I don’t care about anything else.
Why watch sports?
Why follow politics? Most of it never impacts you.
Why are you on a message board expressing your opinion?

Sorry, but you’re significantly out of touch with society if you think only 5% of people view this as a relevant event.
