You're sticking up for a Michigan weirdo because you don't like HHtM. I don't care for the stooge either, but you know damn well this cat is shady as frick with his invokings of Vietnam. Don't front.
I never get worked up over that. It's irrelevant and only makes people who do it look bad. However, it's a key component of this story because of the way Phillips chooses to present himself. Which, like Rocky said, actually IS "stolen valor," if you really care about accuracy with such things.

He then falks about serving from '72 to '76 and then says something about a year and a half in Vietnam.

My two cents is that there are three ways an enlisted person should refer to themselves if they served during a declared war or conflict to eliminate confusion:
Era: Served during the time of conflict and should be honored but never had feet on the ground in the war/conflict zone. This is not disparaging. A guy that fueled B-2s in Missouri for operations in Iraq is to be respected and honored for his service.
Veteran: Was actually in the war/conflict zone at any time during their service.
Combat Veteran: Saw action in the war/combat zone while deployed. Direct peril of some kind.
I’ve never served a day and this is not me passing judgment in any way on anyone that did.
That’s just the personal distinctions I have in my mind.
