But he never claimed that he was a Vietnam vet, only a "Vietnam-times" vet. Semantics be damned! I will cease my incredulity for this situation so that I can be the token contrarian as always.

The only times I've ever heard someone using "Vietnam-era vet" or any similar descriptor (Vietnam times) was when they were trying to do something greasy or make a false impression. The vast majority of vets from that era that didn't serve in Vietnam refer to themselves as 'Cold War vets' or usually just 'vets'. That's if they even bring it up.
