You know what would help stop the merchandise from just walking out the door? Actual real live people checking out the customers instead of having all self-checkout kiosks and letting the customers scan and bag their own goods.

In many small towns walmart is the largest employer and taxpayer. Folks drive 20 or 30 miles to do their shopping there because it is the only available store.
In Chicago it is the same situation. When these stores shut down the city will lose the tax revenue. Folks that rip off these stores are driving nails into their own coffins. They will have to depend on the local corner store , with super high prices and limited selection, to buy their bad snacks, Newports, and malt drinks.
Applying this to beirut rouge, the northern part of this fair city is suffering the same situation. The intelligent folks will survive while the less fortunate will gorge themselves on hot fries.

They'd have access if you stopped mass looting.

Reminds me of NOLA some years ago. I supervised a group of stores there, and one in 9th ward got robbed 4 times in one day. I asked the manager what he did the last time, " he said i threw them the keys and said take what you want". We "wrapped" the store in bullet-proof glass, and did business through a window. Sales doubled because neighborhood knew they weren't walking into a robbery. Hell of a way to do business, but if you haven't functioned , daily, in the ghetto, you have no idea of the constant hassle. So much for meeting the "community's needs".

The solution is easy. Customers order online, and show up and pick their order up. They can pay online, or when they show up to pick their groceries, or hoodies and drawers, up.

There would never be any public access to enter the store. Once paid for, they can pull through a walled off, gated drive-through where they can load their groceries from a cart into their vehicle.

There would never be any actual interaction between employees and customers except when paying through a bullet proof window.

I can't believe all of these community leaders are so fricking ignorant as to where the blame lies. Blaming the victim is always the wrong choice.

Sounds like Chicago will soon have the worlds largest trap house.

Could definitely go back to the old commodity program and cut some food stamps while we are at it...

See, where Walmarks is messing up is not leaving these stores open. They need a few decoy stores or the problems will just move to different locations.

Self check out line here in our rural community doesn't seem to have a problem checking ourselves out

They could do it like in Miami Gardens and turn it into a gigantic strip club like Tootsies if they really want to “serve the community”.

A business is under no obligation to locate or remain in an area that they will lose money in.
Pretty simple.

“Unceremoniously abandoning these neighborhoods will create barriers to basic needs for thousands of residents.”

Why do democrats always use words that they think makes them appear intelligent?

Unceremoniously? As opposed to ceremoniously? Really? Would she have preferred a large ceremony to announce the closing of stores. Some bbq and mobile sno-cone vendors? Maybe a face painting station and balloon artists for the kids?

Yet the idiots she and her ilk pander to will think that she is the next coming of Shakespeare.
