The Vatican cautioned American bishops against denying communion to politicians, including President Biden, over their support for abortion rights.

The New York Times reported Pope Francis has warned that communion can’t be used as a political weapon by Catholic bishops. Biden is the second Catholic president in U.S. history, following President John F. Kennedy.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) will convene their three-day June General Assembly starting on Wednesday and are expected to force debate and a vote on the issue of communion, despite the pope’s warning.

“The concern in the Vatican is not to use access to the Eucharist as a political weapon,” Antonio Spadaro, a Jesuit priest and ally of the pope, told the Times.

Earlier this month, the pope spoke about communion as “not the reward of saints, but the bread of sinners,” the Times also reported.

Biden’s support for abortion rights has often been in the spotlight since it’s at odds with some leaders of the Catholic Church. Biden has been open about his devotion to his Catholic faith and attends Mass most weekends.

So the church that once excommunicated someone for preventing a pregnancy now protects someone for ending a pregnancy.

Y'all tell me the Catholic church isn't evil

The insidious evil that is on full display with zero fricks given is mind blowing.

What a joke the Catholic church has become under this marxist pope. Whatever happened to the sanctity of life and all that?!?! It's only going to make them think twice when the faithful stop giving hard-earned cash to support the inflated hierarchy and farce that pretends to be a Christian church.

Except Biden is completely unapologetic about the sin and even promotes it as a virtue.

Aren't Catholics prohibited from taking communion unless they have gone to confession first?!?! Hmmmm, any guesses as to when the dementia patient last 'confessed?'

Funny, the Bishops have control over their diocese when they do something the Vatican wants political cover for and then this when they don't.

It’s not political . It’s about what people believe in . Sounds like the pope is ok with killing innocent babies. Either we are all going to heaven or a lot of people are going to be disappointed in their after life location.

As a Catholic,my belief is the Church is not evil, but the administration of the church at the moment is evil.

Like the rest of this thread, no nuance and a lot of misinformation.

While the pope is wrong, the hesitancy is ok. We are in a completely different world than even 30 years ago when being Christian and Catholic were the norm and understood. Where sin was actually hidden so making those distinctions and a call like this was unnecessary.

Now, these things are public and championed, and a step to withhold the Eucharist, mind you millions of Catholic in sin take it every weekend, is actually politicizing it.

What you'd be asking Catholic priests to do is the same as what we DON'T want the government doing, namely actually "tracking the sin and support of it." You'd have to keep a list of "offending politicians," and deny them all the Eucharist, you can't just choose the president.

It's dangerous territory for something like that. Pope Francis makes a lot of mistakes, and many on purpose, or with a short sighted viewpoint, but while he might be wrong, he also isn't wrong to question what a step like this means.

No, what the pope is actually saying if that Joe Biden wants to support sin and champion sin, and go even further by taking the Eucharist in a state of sin, then that's his sin he has to deal with.

The problem with this viewpoint is that it isn't consistent to denying the Eucharist to re-married divorcees and other ex-communications that occur. Or giving to a practicing homosexual.

Having a political position is not necessarily a sin. It's poor wisdom and can lead to sin, but if Joe Biden hasn't procured an abortion, he's just a bad Catholic, and not necessarily a sinner. It does depend on his ACTUAL beliefs. Does he encourage abortion? Or does he say we shouldn't limit it? Is his sin actually that he is lying, saying he supports Abortion when internally he doesn't? We don't know.

Mind you, I'm a conservative Catholic, and Francis is an awful Pope, but humans and sin are complex. Navigating that conversation isn't as simple as a one-off line in a discussion board thread.
