Asking about how sick leave is handled in the company doesn't look bad if it is during going over the benefits package the job offers. If i see the benefits package and sick leave isn't mentioned I would ask about it. I do see how someone could assume it should be and fail to ask about it though. I just wouldn't put the blame on the company for me not asking.

Isn't it nice that US companies have a choice of whether or not to offer sick leave?

How old are you? This started back in the 90's where I live. When you got your first job, you would get 2 weeks of vacation and 5 days sick leave.
Guess what? People were calling in sick when they could work, so they changed the policy: 3 weeks vacation/sick leave combined. If you need longer, have to go on short-term disability (basically sick leave paid at a lower rate). You can also buy AFLAC insurance or something similar.
I don't see the problem?
I am ok with the PTO model but typically they call it PTO and say they don't offer sick time. this place didn't. 10 days of vacation, and no sick time.
The place was just run really poorly that is all i can say.

well the thing I would put on the company is endangering their workforce and customers with a backwards policy such as this.

I agree it is a stupid policy to have especially if you have labor that is valuable. It just proves my point though that liberals wanting gov. mandated sick leave hate the free market. This company could be taken down by a better managed company. If the gov forced them into offering sick leave the crap company would be protected from themselves.

Libs don't like choice...unless it involves killing unborn babies.

Do you know the work ethic of those who work at McDonald's?

Significant numbers of employees around the world admit to calling in sick to work when they were not actually sick. China led all surveyed regions with 71 percent of employees admitting to calling in sick when they were not actually sick, while France had the smallest number with only 16 percent. Other countries polled included India with 62 percent, Australia with 58 percent, Canada with 52 percent, the U.S. with 52 percent, the U.K. with 43 percent, and Mexico with 38 percent.

3 weeks vacation/sick leave combined
I have been under this model and the paid sick leave model. Frankly I like the 3 weeks combined model (let's see if I change my mind when I get really sick) as I felt like I was "wasting" sick leave by not taking it.
As long as you can roll your time over (and lots of places don't allow that) I am cool with a pooled bank.

I have 1 week paid sick leave, 6 months short term disability paid @ 100% salary & long term disability kicks in after 6 months paid @ 65%. I also have 4 weeks paid vacation.

i get 18 days plus unlimited sick time. I haven't taken a sick day in almost 2 years.

US is pretty much the only first world country without paid sick leave
You must hate your job if you have to worry about such trivial things as sick leave. Also, if you were valuable enough to your company they would bend over backwards in your time of need. It's extremely expensive replacing employees in corporate America.

I think the bigger issue isn't sick leave, it's unpaid maternity leave

I have this too except 3 weeks of vacation. But no one is counting. I travel and work long hours so it's kind of a quid pro quo.

The OP may want to change that thread title to "without government-mandated paid sick leave." I frankly don't even know if that would be a true statement, but the subject title wrongly suggests that no one in the US has paid sick leave when millions do.

It's my impression that some companies offer 12 weeks. My wife's company did. I know most don't though.
