Not to mention that I have to stand there and make sure the troglodytes are scanning my stuff properly and not trying to throw my 5lb. bag of potatoes on top of my loaf of bread, and a 12-pack of drinks on top of a carton of eggs, along with randomly putting refrigerated items in with things off the shelf.
I would much rather get my stuff, scan it, bag it, and GTFO in much less time with no hassle.

Now, they just throw everything willy-nilly into 75 plastic bags. I MUCH prefer bagging my own stuff, especially if I am buying breads or produce.

You do though. Federal minimum wage is still what $7.25? Say you are paying $10 for a cashier and now you got to go to $20. Your discount comes in the form of not paying for those increased wages.

What they need to do is just have self checkouts as pay by credit/debit only. That way you can be identified if you don't scan something. I wouldn't mind this at all.
Hey customer, we noticed you didn't pay for XYZ at self checkout. We will charge your card for the items missed.
Also, Winn Dixie and Costco does it right with the scales. Those things are awesome. It will pick up any error quickly and show you a replay so you know what didn't scan.

Just hire a security guard at the self checkout. Make the guard stand there 24/7 strapped with an assault rifle. Maybe that will deter the thieves

I don’t steal anything and will be happy to pay extra not to have to wait on some disinterested cashier plus the brain processing speed of the average WalMart shopper.

The one by me used to be 85% self checkout until a couple weeks ago. Now it’s 5% self check and the rest are obese idiots who can barely operate a plastic bag let alone a register.
