If you need to shoot up an engine block you need a magnum. There are better options for pretty much anything else.

Ok if I come off as being preachy, It's not my intent.
Guns have a fascination for people. Starting from even a really, really young age.
I grew up on a farm. We were taught about guns before we hit double digits. We were allowed to put hands on them under supervision. We were taught how to work them, and how to handle them, under supervision. We were also taught what to do and how to react if somebody mishandled one.
The way I was brought up, guns were a part of life. To be respected, and used properly. I think that this really goes far, as to normalizing the presence of them. But, it has to be done with responsibly.
In short, start teaching the grands, is my recommendation. And when they get old enough, take them out to the range and get them some shot count.
It's not just a defense tradition, IMO. There's a lot to be enjoyed recreationally with firearms too.

The problem with a safe is that the gun isn’t readily available when you need it.

Well I have lots and lots and lots of grandkids. But I have guns in half my rooms. They are all well out of reach. None are with chambered rounds. none in the rooms they mainly play in. And all of the gk have parents that have guns who have taught them well. (but I don't take that for certain).

Yeah, I’m not saying it’s a dead certain stupid thing to do. There are real potential benefits from having a gun handy, and there are real perils concerning kids. It was a tough call for me, but I came down on the no guns side. In about 15 years I’ll have no grandkids young enough to worry about. Maybe then.
