Somebody being on welfare is not evidence that employers are "getting away" with anything. The two concepts are not even related.

I call bullshite.

In Chatsworth's case, Besos and them lobby for their employees to be welfare eligible so they don't have to pay as much. The answer he is espousing isn't to take more from Bezos. His answer is to cut welfare.

So, does anyone ACTUALLY believe that wages would rise if welfare was abolished? No. Then welfare isn't a subsidy to the companies then, is it?

I’m not advocating welfare. I think it’s mainly a way to cause govt dependence. Handicapped people that have no means of supporting themselves should get help.

No one is forcing these people to work there. No one is forcing these people not to get at least vocational training. There are enough government programs where a poor person does not really have to pay to get vocational training.

We would pay for it via an increased price of goods and services to pay for all of that, now go sit at the kids table the adults are talking.

This is a fricking dumb talking point, whether tucker or Bernie are saying it.
I agree. I'd hope Tucker was simply trolling. Bezos is an odd target for this either way.

You have jackasses like Warren Buffett who should serve as perfect exhibits in tax arguments. Buffett whines all the time about US inequality and tax unfairness. Yet he has found a way through the GatesFoundation to have barely 1¢ of his $85+ Billion be taxed . . . . EVER!

Worse yet the vast vast majority of Buffett's money, earned in the US off the sweat equity of US taxpayers, will leave the US never to see its way back to aid the American Taxpayer. Buffett represents hypocrisy of the first order. No one is calling him on it.

Interesting.
What EXACTLY would you consider a "Living Wage"?

Walmart to raise its starting wage to $11 and give employees bonuses

And prices would go up to make up for it.

Walmart actually pays well benefits if you move up into management, and with benefits. But if you’re just a cashier or stocking shelves, then its a low skill job thats never going to pay well. People like to call out Walmart on this but almost every grocery store in the country is going to pay those low skill jobs in the same hourly wage range. The biggest difference is when I go to Rouse’s, the cashiers and shelf stockers usually look like they’re high school or college aged. At Walmart most of the people doing the same jobs look 30 and older.

Maybe the government should stop subsidizing bad life choices like not finishing high school or ever learning a marketable skill.

Is that a problem with the employer or the employee or the government?

If themwelfare system were not so extensive, the market would adjust wages to a true equilibrium ... versus the deflated wages generated by that system.

If those were the only 2 companies in the world and the government FORCED those poor souls to work there, i'd concur. As someone who has seen the HELP WANTED ads online, let me just say if you don't like where you work or what you make, quit.

This is like going into Walmart, finding something I want to buy, and then demanding that you help pay for it because I can't afford it.

However, the reality is that given the amount of immigration that is still going on and the number of work visas we give to foreign nationals, that the labor market is broken and is not a simple matter of two people deciding on what wage to work for.

One where you don't have to tap into the welfare system. However this isn't restricted just to Walmart and Amazon. All those commuter airlines you fly around in those 70 seat jets? For years they offered starting wages that qualified for food stamps.

From glassdoor about Republic Airlines "Everything, especially the culture (or lack thereof). This place is run as cheap and with as few personnel as possible. The executives roll in the cash (and Ferrari's) while employees, many of which qualify for food stamps, parade around in filthy airplanes with the paint peeling off the sides. People work here because they have to get experience somewhere to get to a major airline."

Over the course of a couple of decades they found themselves unable to hire new pilots because nobody was going into the industry after 9-11.

So now, although commuter airlines have raised their wages somewhat the classic response is what you hear from other industries: "there's a labor shortage! We need to import foreign workers."

No, there's only a labor shortage at the wage rates you offer with the current disparity between management and front line worker salaries. The answer is to raise the salaries of front line workers, not to subsidize artificially high management salaries by importing foreign workers.

Particularly in the airline industry, where importing foreign pilots represents a significant safety risk to the public depending on where they come from.
