These types of statements, under the Trump letterhead, are why some people will stay home in 2024 if Trump is the Republican nominee. That gives ammunition to those saying the election results are / will be legit. "Look at how divisive he is, so many people stayed home..."
Trump should have used this chance to say something like "even DeSantis, at the bottom of the Republican pecking order, can humiliate Newsom, the poster child of Democrat incompetence and malfeasance. No one but a Democrat could destroy a city like San Francisco and a state like California. We all must come together and defeat the Democrats in 2024, or they will destroy the nation. blah blah blah" and looked at unifying and rallying his party.
But, that's a bridge too far for Trump.

I know better than to get in the cripple fight that is Trump cult vs. DeSantis defenders, but the notion that Trump is a "big government conman" is half right.
He's a conman, no doubt.
He's big government. Small government. Medium-sized government. He's whatever he believes plays to his advantage at any given moment. If five minutes later, the opposite position is what he thinks works, that's what he's for.
