Well, those people pay federal income taxes and PRs don't

Yes they do. PR paid $3.479 billion in taxes last year from 630,000 total returns.

2016 IRS Data Book

eta: My mistake. Misread the sentence and didn't see income. PR doesn't pay federal income taxes, but they do pay other federal taxes.

They paid an average of $933 per citizen.

How much federal money did they get?

ETA:

Federal aid. According to the Consolidated Federal Funds Report compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau, Puerto Rico has received more than $21 billion annually in federal aid from the United States.

They received $5,675 in US aid per person. They netted $4,742 per person in PR.

Otherwise, we ought to consider letting them be truly independent.

The only reason I would consider keeping Peurto Rico is establishing a Naval shipyard and Air Force Base there as well. It would likely address the infrastructure problems they have there.

But if they have no strategic benefit at all or it has some and we're not using it or don't need it, they're just dead weight to the United States of America.

but I think the "FEMA can't stay forever" was pointless and counterproductive.

I don't think Trump needed to say it, but it needed to be said. People are comparing the resources sent to PR for Maria to that of the Haiti earthquakes FFS. They are wanting to bleed the US coffers, as they have done historically. They need to realize that it can't be like that, or at least have it be said out loud, since I'm sure the PR government is very aware of how shady and crooked they are.

But he should have had someone else say it.

Did Houston?

YES

Private citizens did more for the city and their fellow Houstonians than the feds.

This is the problem with dems, they need the nanny state.

People just need to get used to the fact that Donald Trump has no time or patience to use intermediaries, a spokesman or some lame press release to go after critics, a specific hot button issue or something. He'll just go after the damn thing himself and be done with it.

An obligation? What do you mean by that? Can you be specific? Or, are you referring to a moral obligation?

Your point is valid but these numbers aren't accurate. You need to dig into how the 21 billion is allocated to get the true number.

No... but I believe they should pay into our federal system if they want to get something out of it.

The only taxes they pay are payroll taxes, for which they get direct benefits. In addition, if you are from a US state and live there you still pay income tax since US state citizens are taxed on worldwide income.

Then he needs to get better at communicating. He says things that require people to have an understanding of unstated truths. Of course, people don't, so he's allowing himself to be taken out of context. He can pretend not to care about that, but he clearly does, which is why he is always on the attack.

PR can't support themselves.

Now, why is that... I think we know the answer.

I didn't mean to say each person received a check. I should have used per capita.

Bottom line, they are a welfare territory and I don't understand why we do that to ourselves.

If we were loaded and had cash in the bank then you can do all kinds of charity work.

Borrowing money to give to charity is a disaster of a strategy for our future but yet we love that strategy as a country because it makes people feel good.

When I see liberals lining up at the bank to give their own borrowed money I'll actually be impressed.

I'm not completely sure he understands what he is saying. Take his comments about the NFL and removing their federal subsidies.

If they become a state the blue wall grows. That's not something that will change there ever. We will become more socialistic down the road if PR is ever granted statehood.
