The regulations that make it expensive to build housing here are mostly local.

Asbestos was cheap we should go back to using it. Paint was cheaper with lead in it

I grew up in a house with asbestos siding. As long as you don't break it apart and breathe in the fibers, it's harmless.

Same house had lead paint. As long as you don't eat the paint you're fine.

I still have an old farm/camp house that has it.....my grandparents bought it in the early 40s. Was harmless for them, and us.

That stuff won't last forever, and it'll be a PITA when you have to replace it.

If we could just pull money from our ira/401k tax and penalty free to use as a down payment, that would be great.

Some of this is bad and some good.

The good: eliminating burdensome regulatory practices that increase the price of building a new home

The bad: forcing the expansion of the housing supply which will involve tax dollars

That’s not how supply and demand works.

He’s shipping out all the Mexicans. How are any new homes going to be built.

Regulations presumably raise the minimum price on a house. Houses under a certain price would not be profitable due to regulatory costs.

Housing is a human right

I’m so sick of hearing shite that people says anything is a human right. The only thing guaranteed is being born and dying. Anything else you should have to work for. If you don’t want to work for it then you should suffer the consequences.

Those same people crying free market also are in favor of restrictive residential zoning that bans anything but single-family homes (which drives up costs).

Don’t like Trump trying to deflate my home value

Why? Do you like paying higher property taxes?

The only way a higher value will help is if you are downsizing to an apartment or something. When most people sell a house, it's to buy a new, better house, so having overpriced housing only increases the amount you pay in interest and taxes on the new house. Unless you bought your house a long time ago, it would essentially cancel out your equity.

It also makes it more difficult to sell your house and move up, because now it is harder for younger people to afford the house you're selling. Inflated housing prices only benefit a few people, mainly those who are selling without reinvesting in a new property.

If Team Trump deports millions of illegals in the next 1-2 years I think some of the housing shortage would be alleviated. There are likely millions of homes currently occupied by illegals that could be available for US citizens.
