It didn’t sound arbitrary at all. Sounded to me like an extremely clear dividing line….
Pay your NATO dues, get the value of NATO membership. Don’t pay your dues, get cut off from those membership perks. You know, just like every other club on the planet that charges a membership fee… you have to pay that fee to remain a member.
Is that really arbitrary?

The problem isn't Trump's stance, it's your own short-sightedness.
We're over $34T in debt with annual projected deficits of over $1.5T per year. We've been spending more in annual deficits than we have been spending on servicing debt for over a decade now (last year debt servicing was just over $1T), which means we're in a spiral of borrowing more and more just to fund being able to borrow more and more because the budget has grown well beyond revenues.
What that means is we simply cannot afford to be NATOs sugar-daddy any longer. We'll help as we can, but the European members should have the primary responsibility of funding their defense.
Along with all this, Trump's whole stance is old news. He actually did this during his term and the result was that the other member nations began paying more.
You would sacrifice the United States just to avoid holding the European NATO members to providing more for their own defense.

Only the US taxpayer has expectations to meet demands.
Everyone else gets a pass.
Pushing back is long overdue and much needed.

Let's put this in simple terms. You are a member of an exclusive gold club. Some of the members quit paying the dues. You love the club so you begin carrying more of the burden of it's upkeep. More members quit paying but you pick up the burden. Those members are still there paying nothing or next to nothing. Eventually, you are carrying the vast majority of the load. That's what's happening now.

The agreement calls for every nation to spend a certain percentage of GDP on defense. Many aren’t doing that. If they won’t follow the agreement why should we?

Thoughts? Good for Trump. The United States are not the protectors of the world. Pay your share or GTFO

What do you think about the members who refuse to spend the amounts required by the treaty? Aren't they violating the agreement and being feckless?

This is classic Trump -- it's the unpredictability he brings to the table that gets other countries to fall in line.

Europeans have paid universal health care. We don’t.
Europeans have pensions. We don’t.
Europeans have six weeks off in the summer, called holiday there, vacation here. We don’t.
So they don’t spend on their own defense in violation of a treaty they signed? And their citizens have a better quality of life than most Americans? GMAFB.

Trump's position is that the USA should continue to be a sucker for Europe. Even if they paid what they agreed to pay (you know...treaty and all), the US would still be carrying the vast majority of the cost of NATO.
Think of it as an insurance policy. The contract still exists, but if you don't pay the premium, they ain't gonna pay when a tree falls on your house.

I for one embrace returning to 1980 euro maps. The eastern euro women were hotter back then. Trump knows this. He married a couple women from the commie side of the wall. I’ll miss Prague somewhat, but West Berlin being in East Germany was awesome.
