Agree. I think he thought it was going to a Venezuela type situation bc the opportunity to wipe out like 50 people at once. Once the back up plan didn’t work I think they didn’t have much of a choice than to proceed how they have. I think he’s done a good job in the current circumstances but it certainly changed the narrative and gave the liberals something to run on. I think his peace via strength was a huge reason many independents supported him. This kinda gave that narrative back to the dems.

Trump's tacit support of Russia, or lack of support for Ukraine, didn't cause the price of oil to rise.
Iran has been a huge distraction for Trump. He could have devoted a lot more time to helping GOP candidates retain their seats, otherwise.
