Trump secures historic deal with Greenland and Denmark...

U.S. will have exclusive rights to establish military bases in Greenland. China, Russia and non-Nato countries are banned.

it does because if the goal was to just establish military bases there, this could've been done on day 1.

No not true.
Denmark didn’t want to just let us walk in and setup bases. They wanted to keep it and hold control over it once we expressed interest.
Trump threatened to take it or buy it and now got based which is what he wanted ultimately.

And it was de facto the case Canada was a strong ally to the US. Until it wasn't.
There is a global political realignment occurring right now. Assuming things are going to continue they way they have for the past eighty years is naive at best.
