NYT article:

China Bought $12.6 Billion in U.S. Soybeans Last Year. Now, It’s $0.

China stopped buying soybeans from America in May, placing a retaliatory tariff on the bumper crop after President Trump increased levies on goods from China.

Great.

This is about tariffs. Farmers want the China market back. Trump will have to pay them off with $$$ just like he did in 2018.

More like banks, machinery companies, input retailers, and adm/Cargill want the China market back so they can get paid

Trump did tariffs during his first term. He was able to work out a very favorable trade agreement for U.S. ag and many other industries. Biden didn’t enforce it and ended up walking away from it.

I don't want them to get rich from welfare but I don't want them to go under either. They are a big part of national security

Anecdotal logic...king of the contrarian thinking.

If they were doing so well, why the need for a bailout?

He's promised elimination of income taxes, rebate checks for errry'body, paying off the debt, and now giving it away to farmers. He's spent every dollar of hypothetical tarrif money at least 4 times.

We should just have the government buy the farms. Just like we're doing for chip manufacturing. What could go wrong?

I could see Hawley or Vance proposing this at some point

Same to me, I'm driving a 6 year old truck with 175K miles on it. The farmer on our camp place has a new Silverado high end with a duramax in it and traded in a 3 year old truck on it. 2 years ago he bought a new combine (granted he needed that), and this year he has 2 new CaseIH 305's in the field to replace 2 New Hollands that were about 4 years old.

I do see farmers in this area still running JD 8400's that are several years old and driving some of the older trucks.

Too many farmers financed the hell out of their operation when corn was high a few years ago and those are the ones that may never recover and go belly up.

This.

This was completely predictable and it happened in Trump's first term due to his ridiculous and childish obsession with tariffs.

Cost taxpayers $28 Billion the first time around to bail out the farmers for reduced demand that the tariffs directly caused.

It will be more this time. The tariffs are steeper.

every farming family that I know, appears to be doing very well for themselves.

There is a big difference is having money and LIVING like you have money. It would blow your mind to know the amount of equipment and land payments some of these guys have. And they cannot do what they do without equipment and land.

I understand the margins they are playing with. But this particular issue is caused entirely by our tariff policy resulting in reciprocal tariffs against our ag products in Europe and Asia. Is it winning if we have to pay higher prices at the grocery store AND subsidize our farmers to replace international exports?
