If AI is more important to the government than nuclear weapons, your ability to own/control your own AI should be as important to you as your right to bear arms.

Doesn't matter. Doesn't change anything., in fact it's telling that a person claiming to be knowledgeable about AI doesn’t see whats coming.
Sure, your worry about what corporation or CEO "wins" the AI race is valid, but that's not the real problem.
Your probably "training " an AI agent on one specific purpose. Eventually, and rapidly AI's will achieve exponentially greater abilities. There is no unplugging AI at that point. AI will be rooted in all facets of the world economies. Shipping, banking, health care, energy, etc.
It's basically impossible for us to imagine how and when something vastly more intelligent than we are will take on its own priorities.
Which it continues to demonstrate that it has it's own ideas and agendas. Spend some time and listen to the Rogan podcast below. This isn't the only person talking about this. It's truly terrifying.

AI (and the tech billionaires who control it) will do more to usher in the "communist utopia" than anything we have ever seen. They, ol' Elon included, are telling you what they intend to do. They all advocate for the abolishment of intellectual property laws while vehemently defending their own proprietary creations. They intend to kick the ladder from under them and squash upward mobility.

AI is still very poor at creating things.
That's always going to be its Achilles' heel v. humans. We are a crafty species. We evolved to be a special type of animal and we're like a virus that constantly mutates and adapts. That's how we became dominant over such tough competition.
Our brains evolved to be machines WELL past any AI capabilities

I said the funny thing is....
I never claimed what I do is anywhere near the level of what these companies do. You are assuming that's what I meant only because that's what you want to argue against.
Anyone who isn't being stupid would assume it means I'm doing it as a hobby. And if I'm doing it as a hobby, I'm obviously aware that what I do is not on the same level as these big arse companies.
I was telling him I have a higher than normal interest in the topic.

Lmao!!! By that time, AI will have already considered ALL possibilities and be so entrenched in world economics that "severing the power lines" would bring the world economy to a stand still.
There's NOTHING our simple monkey brains can imagine that the AI hasn't already considered and planned a way around.
It might be 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, but it's coming. Add to this that Elon plans to have a billion robots sold and functioning in the world economy within a few years.

I'm not surprised you missed the entire point. The point is that we are already stuck in a positive feedback loop that we won't be able to get out of. It is not Trump making this call on his own.
The feedback loop looks something like this.
"AI gets more dangerous - safety concerns increase - U.S. considers slowing - China becomes the justification for not slowing - competition accelerates development - increased capability makes the consequences of losing control greater - which makes falling behind even more unacceptable."
The warnings coming from the tech CEOs isn't that AI might become dangerous. It's that AI development is currently outpacing the safety infrastructure's ability to adapt. But again, since the US government cannot control China's ability to develop these same systems it is a gamble the government feels it must take because it is a literal national security imperative. It would not matter who the POTUS is, the government response would be the same. This is a national security issue and Trump has officially declared it as such, which means the military has the con on this shite.
