Let the Big 3 go bankrupt.

They will be replaced by a new generation of entrepreneurial companies who will bring us the products we want at a lower price. It's the only way.

And if the Chinese want to build factories here I don't see the issue. At least there will be construction jobs for Americans to build the factories.

As long as they want us driving smart phones, the industry can’t and won’t be saved.

If one is a farm boy like me, trucks are a must. But the massive population that travels to work don’t care about the vehicle as long at it comfortably gets them there on the cheap. They love to spend that money on other things like vacations, eating out, high tech toys and their kids. Environmental concerns also weigh in, rightly so given said populations.

The Chinese are likely the most energetic and efficiently pragmatic people on Earth. Their cultural history is astounding and given the diversity weaknesses of the current US populace, and our pseudo’Free Market’ we simply cannot compete and win. It’s like we need ‘affirmative action’ to stay in the game.

I do not understand complex economic theory but I can easily see the players and the results. Freedom has innate weaknesses and inefficiencies that an Authoritarian culture simply will not have. Our Founders knew that our Constitutional Republic only worked for “a moral and religious people”, I.e. a population which was personally responsible and virtuous. To the degree that they are not, Freedom becomes a societal handicap as opposed to an advantage.

Yes! Just give us a choice again if that’s what we want. The environmental regs have taken that ability away .

The environmental regs are responsible for high-stress engines, bumpers that don't bump, auto stop/start & other stuff that adds cost and decreases reliability.

But environmental regs aren't adding 8 way power seats, leather, folding mirrors, 360 cameras, etc. That's just the stuff people want.

The problem with the auto industry is that they are only considering the US market. The rest of the world wants EVs and China is happy to provide.

If Detroit doesn't make EVs a priority, it will no longer be the world's car maker. China is innovating and looking to the future, not backwards.

At the end of the day, most people don't care how their car is powered. They want affordability and reliability. If domestic EVs can provide this, people will buy.

Top global auto sales are Toyota, VW then Hyundai/Kia before you get to GM.

I'm torn on this one. I'm partial to the big three because of where I live, but if China is putting out great inexpensive EVs that are better than anything we have here, doesn't the American consumer deserve to have that choice?

Why not let them make our cellphones and some military eqpt too. Right?

I’m not talking about doing away with EVs. I’m saying we need to have a choice between hugging a tree and pulling a tree stump out of our yard, without the government forcing us one way .

You do you. Let me do me.

Right now I can’t buy a new vehicle that’s not styled a certain way or built on a certain platform , because the polar bears look sad.

We can't afford EV's at any price point. It would take 25 or more years to get the power grid up to supporting this.

Yes. The Chinese government heavily subsidizes their auto industry and a lot of their labor is paid nearly slave wages. That's not competing on the basis of quality, which is a foundational aspect of healthy capitalism.

Stop the electronic surveillance .

100%! Government intervention has gone well beyond safety features (seat belts, for example) to intrusion (remote kill switches, cameras monitoring behaviors, etc).

if I want it

That's the real key here, letting the market decide. Government's involvement (both the Chinese and the US) skews market decisions and thus far those have resulted in lower quality, higher prices or both.

One issue and as to why Chinese EVs won't be allowed in the US, is that it's a virtual guarantee that those cars will be loaded with surveillance and spyware software and tech.

We already have Chinese made routers and modems mapping out our homes; I don't think the Feds are going to put Chinese surveillance tech on the roads.

I've ridden in many Chinese EVs, both inexpensive and expensive in the past few years. They are years ahead of Tesla in comfort, ride, tech, and price. China is not our enemy. I still drive American. As a matter of fact I bought a GMC Canyon last week because I thought it was a much better vehicle than a Toyota after test driving each. Would I have bought a Chinese truck? I don't know, maybe. But, why not give me the choice as there is no sane reason not to.

I want a five-speed manual transmission in a 4WD pickup with a carburetor and NO FRIGGIN' COMPUTERS on board!

These 10-speed transmissions that are 100% computerized are a massive headache waiting to happen. I want to drive a real automobile again. Not a stinkin' computer with wheels. And I most certainly am not pleased with the idea that new vehicles will have an AI-controlled disable switch integrated into the system.

The Chinese have stolen so much tech from American companies, time to pay back the favor. Get a hold of one of these great Chinese EV cars and reverse engineer it. Put our computer hackers to work on stealing every bit of data and specs we need from the Chinese car companies. Give all that info to our American automakers.

You know we could do that if we wanted. I don't see the problem with it given how China has been robbing and stealing from us for decades.

We don't have to give them anything, we can let them reverse engineer it themselves and just not enforce our own IP laws. That's a helluva lot better than taking away an option from the consumer.
