Has tech changed & improved over 100 years? Trump said they’d been working on this ship design for a long time

Perhaps the nuclear cruise missiles need a larger platform to launch from than a destroyer, or these carry some other advantages we aren’t currently aware of.

Such a huge waste of money wtf. We found out battleships were obsolete almost 100 years ago.
For crying out loud, this isn’t going to be a giant armored gun battery.

Grok, is the current version of the battleship obsolete?
No, the modern version of the battleship that President Trump is proposing to build is not currently obsolete — because it’s a proposed new design that hasn’t been built yet.
On December 22, 2025, Trump announced plans for a new class of large surface combatants dubbed the “Trump-class” battleships as part of a broader “Golden Fleet” initiative. These are described as next-generation warships (around 30,000–40,000 tons displacement, larger than current U.S. destroyers but smaller than historical Iowa-class battleships), equipped with advanced weaponry including:
• Hypersonic missiles
• Electric railguns
• High-powered lasers
• Nuclear-capable sea-launched cruise missiles
• Potentially integrated drone command capabilities
The design draws inspiration from historical battleships like the Iowa-class (which were decommissioned in the 1990s after brief modernizations in the 1980s), but it incorporates modern missile-centric, directed-energy, and hypersonic systems rather than relying primarily on big guns for ship-to-ship combat.
Why traditional battleships became obsolete
Historical battleships (e.g., Iowa-class) were designed for gun-based naval warfare and became obsolete after World War II due to:
• The rise of aircraft carriers and long-range missiles
• Vulnerability to air and missile attacks
• High costs and crew requirements compared to more flexible platforms
The U.S. Navy hasn’t built or operated true battleships since the 1990s, shifting to missile-armed destroyers, cruisers, and carriers.
The proposed modern version
Trump’s plan emphasizes a “heavily armed platform” with a mix of guns and missiles, framed as a counter to threats like China’s naval expansion. It’s not a revival of old gun-heavy designs but a new ship type blending legacy aesthetics with cutting-edge tech. Critics (including some retired admirals) argue it may not fit modern naval needs, where networked missiles, stealth, and unmanned systems dominate over large, expensive capital ships.
The first ships are slated to begin construction soon, with plans for 20–25 total, but this is still in the early stages — no ships exist yet to be deemed obsolete. Whether it ultimately proves effective will depend on future testing, costs, and strategic priorities.

Here is an article..
New Trump Class Battleships
quote:
President Donald Trump unveiled a new “Trump class” of Navy battleships Monday, describing them as a superior war fighting vessel to replace an “old and tired and obsolete” US fleet.
“They’ll help maintain American military supremacy, revive the American ship building industry, and inspire fear in America’s enemies all over the world,” Trump said in revealing the new category of vessel from the library at Mar-a-Lago.
Flanked by renderings of the “Trump class” battleships at sea, Trump said he would take an active role in their design. The president made the announcement Monday afternoon in Florida with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is also national security adviser. He didn’t use the term “Trump class” in his remarks.
The “Trump class” ships will form part of the new “Golden Fleet” that the president has ordered up for the Navy, meant to better counter China and other adversaries and to more closely adhere to Trump’s aesthetic standards.
quote:
Fitted with “guns and missiles a the highest level,” hypersonic weapons, electric rail guns, cruise missiles and the “most sophisticated lasers in the world,” the new battleships will be the largest ever built, Trump said.
quote:
“I’m not a fan of some of the ships you do. I’m a very aesthetic person and I don’t like some of the ships you’re doing aesthetically,” Trump told an assemblage of military brass gathered at Quantico earlier this year.

What can you say other than Trump was pushing battleships in 2018 or so and the Navy was not happy.
Never mind we see that now a cheap drone can take out a huge ship and the cost ratio is nuts to think about.
Trumps a boomer...boomers want to go boom..

We don't need big battleships. We need a shitload of destroyers.
You guys obviously know nothing of the navy. The “battleships” trump referred to are upgraded Arleigh Burke destroyers that we already have many of in the fleet. If you think he’s referring to Iowa class actual battleships you’re ignorant

It's a Super Cruiser. The current Ticonderoga Class Cruisers are getting long in the tooth, and their missions are vital to the aerial defense of the Carrier Battle Group .

Where will they get the manpower to build these in the United States?

We can’t even build frigates. What a joke.
