The two letters received at The Washington Post were signed by Channing D. Phillips, the acting U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., and John C. Demers, the head of the Justice Department’s national security division. The correspondence listed five phones for which records had been seized: Nakashima’s work, cell and home phones, and Miller’s work phone and cellphone. The letter to Entous cited his cellphone number.

The seizure of reporters’ phone records has been a controversial topic in recent years, as both the Trump and Obama administrations escalated efforts to stop leaks and prosecute government officials who disclose secrets to reporters.

In early August 2017 — days after the time period covered by the search of The Post reporters’ phone records — Sessions held a news conference to announce an intensified effort to hunt and prosecute leakers in government.
quote:

“This culture of leaking must stop,” Sessions said, noting that the number of leak investigations had tripled since the end of the prior administration. That announcement seemed aimed at appeasing Trump, who had publicly complained about leaks that made him look bad, and branded Sessions “weak” on hunting leakers.

So it’s ok to spy on candidate Trump and President Trump but not ok to spy on those who receive national security information.

Probably thought you had a gotcha posting this didn’t you.

I thought it was wrong when Obama did it. And it was wrong for Trump to do it too. Leaks need to be plugged from the inside.

I thought Trump should have applied for FISA warrants for every single one of his political opponents. Fastest way to get reform.

They needed to seize something, the leaks during the Trump administration were unprecedented.

If there were more people willing to be consistent, we’d be in a much better place

I support TA and Ace. It's messed up. If you want to get into who has been worse from a goon police state standpoint, we can do that.

When the internals of our government strive to undermine a president duly elected by leaking top secret information including conversations of the president. Any means necessary should and will be used to stop this. So piss on your stupid post.

Lol! After the BS Trump had to deal with for the past four years who could blame him for fighting back a little dirty. His opponents had no rule book except the unwritten rules of the Swamp.

Perhaps I'm just interpreting your post incorrectly, but as it were, what would be wrong with folks rushing to defend the investigation of potential violation of federal law, i.e. leaking classified information? Would seem like a prudent thing to do, would it not?

I can’t get thru Wapo’s paywall, nor am I paying WAPO. Curious for those of you who can:

Did they seize records or actually listen to the calls? Obama actually listened to James Rosen’s phone calls and read his emails. Sheryl Atkinson too.

I have a problem with both, but way more of a problem is the content was observed.

My problem with it is a 4A Problem. Journalists don’t have any greater 4A protections than anyone. It pisses me off that they think they do.

Also - Why are we just finding out about this now? Makes me wonder if it’s even accurate. This is WAPO. Warrantless wiretapping is despicable, even if the tapped are despicable WAPO people. Seems like they would have gotten way more mileage from this in 2017. I mean If you could hear it about their screeching about everything else.

The letters do not say when Justice Department leadership approved the decision to seek the reporters’ records, but a department spokesman said it happened in 2020, during the Trump administration. William P. Barr, who served as Trump’s attorney general for nearly all of that year, before departing Dec. 23, declined to comment.

The key here is that is it "seized" if they did nothing to the individual who owned the phone. The intent here was to find the leakers... Phone owner likely suffered no consequence.
