re: Trump calls for nuclear option, time to eliminate the filibuster

The filibuster is bad for this country. I have no problem with 60 votes for certain types of bills but I just can’t abide by the ability for a minority party to stall the actual voting on bills.

Who is not getting paid exactly?

Despite pressure from the far left, democrats haven’t done it yet when they have had power. For the first two years of the Biden presidency, he had a majority in both chambers. There will calls to eliminate the 60 vote filibuster, and many people thought they were gonna do it. But they resisted because they realized Republicans will also have the same type of majority again one day.
Yes they have. 12 years ago when they packed the courts with liberal judges. The went with the nuclear option then.
And they didn’t have enough Dim support to do anything but install judges. Manchin wouldn’t vote for it.

Everybody needs to go back and read the Federalist Papers. The Senate is supposed to be slow. It keeps maniacs like Sanders and Schumer from ramming things down our throats.

And while we are at it, let's go back to pre 17th Amendment.

Say hello to the four Democrats senators from DC and Puerto Rico.
Say hello to the 6 new SCOTUS justices-Warren, AOC, Letitia James, Alvin Bragg, Eric Swalwell, and Merrick Garland.
ETA the shutdown is not hurting the GOP. The Dems are counting on the GOP panicking once SNAP ends. Dem Base-public service union is already whining about Dem inaction.
The GOP needs to hold fast.

Lots of triggered panicians in this thread. Trump is playing this masterfully, but keep sky screaming like a libtard

The people who want to nuke the filibuster are incapable of thinking about the future ramifications

So you are arguing that the Dems won't end the filibuster if they take power again. You might be right, but the Dems haven't been shy about setting a new precedent to get what they want.
My thoughts, 1. we don't do it, Rs eventually cave (it's what they do best) and the Dems nuke the filibuster when they achieve power again or 2. we do it and the Dems do it too when they achieve power again.

Can Republicans eliminate the filibuster now, and put in back in place later? While have majority, use it, then just in case, reverse it?
They could but the precedent would have been set that the majority can change their rules whenever they want to pass something the minority does not want. Once the filibuster is broken, there is no going back, this is why it's very controversial in both parties to break it.

I’m not against legislation being slow but I am for our elected officials having to state their position with votes. I didn’t say anything about passing quickly. I just want votes on record. Filibuster lets folks weasel around on their positions.

When the vote is taken on cloture-ending the filibuster-you know how people are voting.
Just imagine the damage Democrats can do with no filibuster. They’ll only need 50+1 to give statehood to DC and Puerto Rico, and pack SCOTUS.
That’s too high a price to pay.
The shutdown will end-they always do. The GOP is winning on this.

What’s wrong with DC and PR becoming states besides it being bad for GOP math? My opinion is we did not hold onto territory this long without integrating it as a state until the 20th century. Columbia being a district rather state doesn’t really make sense anymore because we do not have N v. S sectional politics. With territories like PR, we either need to start their path to statehood or let them declare independence. I think it is antithetical to the spirit of our founding to have perpetual territorial holdings that have a 2nd tier status in many respects.

You mean the filibuster that really isn't a filibuster. As in no marathon speech, just a speechless filibuster. So how come the Republicans are having a hissyfit cause President Trump is threatening to use the "nuclear option" to eliminate the no filibuster filibuster?
Pull the trigger on this Mr. President - end this absurdity.
