But... Trump didn't say it. Nor did one of his surrogates. A comedian said it at a rally. Do you think that the comedian submitted all of his jokes to the Trump team ahead of time?

It's definitely not going to sink Trump, because he didn't say any of it, but it was unnecessary no matter what the cost. It's not even really that funny and nothing is gained by it.
