Not that I am a big spender, but the tipping expectation in America is nuts. A teenager barely makes eye contact, no personality, punches a few buttons on an iPad, and then flips it around with a preloaded 20% tip on it. Ridiculous
One of my favorite guilty pleasures is watching the discussion change on reddit concerning this.
5 years ago, pandemic time, all they talked about was living / sustainable wages and the need for you old codgers to pony up for basic service.
Then the CC terminals flowed with fixed categories for tipping (even fast food) and airport kiosks, where traditionally tipping isn't expected. Minimum is 15%, Maximum I've seen is 30%. LMAO. If you didn't like it, you were a fascist and a bigot.
Now, it's the other way around and I'm loving it. They often sound like us here on a [fairly] conservative forum.
'Why should I pay a tip when I picked the drink from a cooler to serve myself'...
They believe it's out of control as well.

Why are people complaining about this?
You can now tip less than before since they get all of it.
Win, win.

Five Guys is a great example.
They take your order and the receipt has a space for a tip. Which you fill out BEFORE you receive your order.
After completing you order, they give you a cup and YOU make your drink. They call your number and YOU go get your food.
If you want condiments then YOU go get them.
When you are finished eating YOU take your trash to the bin.
What exactly am I supposed to be tipping for?

I love going to pick up food and the screen where you check out asks you what tip you want to leave. That pisses me off more than anything about tipping. They have provided no service other than doing what the business does...prepare the food. Maybe I'm out of line, but it is just asking for handouts on what used to be reserved for the actual servers. It makes me not want to go back to these places. I always leave a couple dollars at a buffet but I've had servers ask me for a good tip....at a buffet

Apparently those can't be removed/changed in a CR.
H.R. 904 has been submitted for removing tax on Social security.

I mean, the real answer is the credit card processing companies made a standardized system for all industries and instead of turning that feature off, business realized people are dumb and will apply a tip to almost anything when asked. You aren't "supposed" to be doing anything.
What I find interesting is especially at like mom and pop places, it was fairly common for them to have a tip jar or something on the checkout counter. I'm sure some people would, some wouldn't. It wasn't a big thing though. Now that people are shown essentially the same thing on a tablet, people lose their minds and panic tip for no damn reason

Which the politicians will have no backbone to support

No I am not. I am smart enough to realize that a 10% increase in the bill is the same money once you factor in sales tax that I would be spending if I tipped the server 20%.
Here’s an idea: how about we stop blaming the small business that’s barely making ends meet and stop taxing them out the arse?
I own a restaurant and I pay over 25k a month in taxes to the government. If I could keep that money in the bank I’d be able to pay everyone who worked for me a great wage with benefits.
I am not blaming the businesses. I am blaming the American tipping culture. I fully support limiting government and lowering taxes on business. I do not want government to outlaw tipping. If it were up to me then the industry as a whole would change from paying min wage + tips to a fair market wage without tips.

Well that defeats the whole purpose now, doesn't it?
Posted on 5/21/25 at 11:38 am to CueBacca
No, it's purposeful.
Let's see them work for tips only.
It'll end up like the left coast and pay their service folk min wage and wipe out tips completely.

Exactly, the way to destroy the income tax is incrementally.
One bite at a time.

Haven't caught up on the thread, but I'm here for a couple of thoughts on the matter:
1. If I'm on my feet when my order is given to me, I'm not tipping.
2. If the entire premise is that the server's efforts are so invaluable that I should pay additional money for the privilege - Then why doesn't the establishment pay them more than half of the minimum wage?
3. Related to #2 - If the server's efforts are so invaluable that I should pay more on top of what the establishment charges - Where is my 20% discount for self-checkout?

... since the first of the year I have been starting a new trend "no tip" trend for anything unless a sit down meal
The automatic bill pay screen is required to give you this option with the words "skip" at the bottom. If you don't see this complain.
No matter how many hateful stares I get
I use that button frequently --, I do have a very thick skin ...
New trend --- try it
You'll like it.

Exactly. The primary reason we can't get tax relief is because so few support lower taxes for others. But everyone supports lower taxes for themselves.
IDGAF about any of that, this will further increase the push for tips on any and everything, passing on this to customers who have real jobs

When no tip is warranted, I still hit “other amount” and round up to the nearest dollar. To this day I’ve only had one person make a snide gesture, to which I responded, imagine if everyone who hit 0 was kind enough to round up like me.
The girl responded “you right” and handed me my items.

People have tried implementing service charges to offset tips
They generally have a service charge in restaurants for parties of 6 or more. The funny thing is that they often call it a "gratuity" on the bill.

Need a breakdown of this $25K....sales tax isn't your money, you are merely an agent of the state. payroll taxes...you are only responsible for half and the other half is withheld from employee wages (again, not your money once the work is performed, incurring the wage liability).
Context matters, and your blanket statement doesn't illustrate anything productive.

Not sure who “they” is but typically, traditionally, you’d implement auto gratuity for large parties. But as I’ve explained here before a service charge is not the same as “gratuity” in the eyes of the government. It’s considered income and the business is taxed on that income.

It illustrates how much taxes are paid compared to what our revenue is for my business. Small restaurant that doesn’t 95-100k in revenue a month is a vessel for 25k worth of sales tax, LBD tax and FICA. And it’s no different than a lot of other businesses. I have to keep labor below 20% to survive. As much as I don’t want to pay servers 2.13 an hr and get tips I have to because if I pay more it kills my labor. I’ve service charged in the past but at the end of the day the public is never happy with any outcome. With the SC my prices need to be raised.
