Depends who that public figure is.
Trump had had death threat type postings for years, there’s no huge rush to prosecute those people.
A wheelchair dependent man ranted on social media about Biden, they gunned him down.
J6 people have text messages and social media used against them in court. Rioters attacking a federal building nightly in Portland have all charges dropped, no texts or social media posts used against them.
The justice system isn’t equal. If you can’t acknowledge that, you’re either obtuse or stupid.

Pretty wild to hear a VP candidate say there is no right to free speech around our democracy. If there is no right to free speech, then you do not have a democracy.

The First Amendment protects all speech. That includes "hate" speech and "misinformation".
If he wants to call out misinformation and disinformation, he need look no farther than ABXi, NBXi, XiBS, MSDNC, XiNN, Faux News, NYT, NPR, WaPo, etc.. Funny that those ^^^ entities actually have an extra layer of speech protection, while they lie and mislead more than anyone.

I wonder if he would like our Supreme Court to chime in on whether his statement is misinformation

He’s precisely incorrect in that the government decides. Private corporations and entities can do so within reason but the government absolutely cannot declare something dangerous speech unless it is blatant. They really want another 6-3 decision eh?
