re: Thoughts on kids and school lunches

If it were me I’d make school lunches dependent on kids grades... Honor roll kids should eat for free and other kids have to pay. Failing kids shouldn’t eat

A number of school systems now provide free lunch to everyone at some/all schools, because the cost of trying to figure out who is eligible is more than the cost of just paying for the food for the remaining kids that aren't eligible.
Look, for all of you "OMG the gubment teat" types... people get accustomed to a lifetime of government support because of the decisions they make as adults... not some 8 year old getting lunch (or breakfast or whatever).
If every kid got a free lunch, there are a ton of admin jobs and costs you could eliminate. In the end, the entire system would probably cost a little bit more, but I'm guessing not much more. And as a society, this seems like an easy thing we can do to help families.
And for the "well I paid my kids lunch bill dangit" people... great. We used to also use leaches as medical tools and told blacks they had to use seperate bathrooms. Sometimes we evolve and that's a good thing.
BTW my oldest kid hasn't eaten a school lunch in 3 years and my youngest eats it 3-4 times a week.

Maybe take one free meal from the prisoners and give it to the children?
Or is this a trick question? Maybe the prisoners are children.
I mean...there's already a thing called "free and reduced lunch" that's free or reduced and it's lunch. It's for kids in schools.

I'm not big on government welfare at all but when viewed in the light of prisoners getting 3 meals a day I can't believe we still don't just have one free meal a day for kids in school.
What say you?
why?
Shouldn't parents be responsible for feeding their kids?

Why stop at lunch, why not breakfast and a supper to go?
The kids on the free program when I was in school could get a free breakfast too. Like others, I do not see the problem with the lunches being free in public schools. The parents can still send them to school with a packed lunch, but it would make sense IMO.

Nothing is free. So, why should the taxpayer subsidize it? That's the question.
In your opinion, why shouldn't parents be responsible for feeding their kids lunch?

It seems strange to me that we are going to spend $10,000 plus per student per year on education, and fret over $200 in lunch costs (and probably a lot lower than that once you remove the compliance costs).
Nothing is free... this is true. Sometimes, we as a society decide that we would rather collectively pay for something, to ensure a certain standard is met.

They are responsible for ensuring their kids get fed. Just like they are responsible for ensuring their kids go to school.
To accomplish that, they can go the private route or they can go the public route.

Those parents who cannot or will not don't have to face any ridicule for not doing so.
Parents who have kids that they cannot or will not feed certainly deserve ridicule. Taking care of your children's needs should be a matter of pride. Too many people don't feel ashamed for leeching off of others.

I tend to be pretty conservative but the person who suffers from a pitiful parent who won't pay for lunch is the kid. I look at it like the free textbooks. Just another cost of education. Quit playing games with "need" and just feed the kids.

I couldn’t care less if kids get free lunches; in fact, I think it’s a good community based thing and we should make more kids have nutritional lunches. I know the school districts can afford it. I think when the GOP argues against stuff like this it’s when they lose people.

Poor kids get free lunches.
Some non-poor kids get free lunches.
What are you talking about?

I'm a conservative, vote Republican down the board every election.
I don't see how anyone can say that this doesn't need to be implemented since kids are forced by law to attend school.
Just as our tax dollars go to highways they also go towards highway signage and repair.

It’s not the kid’s fault that their families are broke and won’t send them with food. We should feed them. That one meal a day might be enough reason to keep them coming to school. That is one more chance that they don’t end up on welfare.
I have donated a lot of my time to packing lunches for kids in inner city schools. They get a back pack on Friday to take home so they can have food. You can see it that that is the only meal they might get that weekend.
