no but in the 60s you could finish high school and go get a job at the local Ford service department and buy a house while your wife stayed at home and raised kids. Something changed

Most homes had one car. Most homes had one tv. None of them had computers. Most of them didn’t have campers or pleasure boats or weekend toy vehicles. My wife’s stove costs more than every appliance in my mothers kitchen, by a lot. And the list goes on and on. That’s what’s different.

No cell phones. Vacation was a luxury that many people didn't have. Many family homes homes were 1400 Sq ft for a family of 6. American's expectations have changed as well and that's certainly part of it.

Too many people living well beyond their means. Sometimes too good of credit can be a bad thing for some people. They can charge or finance things but can’t pay it back.

No cable bill, no internet bill, no cell phone bill. No credit card bills, for tons of useless junk made in chyna.

Truth. But, the OP's expectations are just waaaaaay off as well.

People in 1970 who made minimum wage didn't expect to be able to afford an average new home.

In stereotypical millennial fashion, he's really just complaining because he's disappointed in his ability to compete and has an unreasonable expectation that things be handed to him. Honestly, that's where millennials were screwed...by the way they were raised and the values they were not taught (personal pride, hard work, integrity, etc.).

Who still has a cable bill? And most homes back then had a home phone bill, who still has a home phone these days?

Great. Let’s make minimum wage $500 a hour!

Problem solved.

And it will probably break in three years.

Most Americans don't have any of these.

Oh man.

Who were these parents?

So you are saying the older generation did a crap job of parenting?

First thing we agree on.

Streaming pretty much costs as much as cable now and a home phone was like $18/mo vs people's $250/mo cell phone bills.

I still have a Land line. I don't need a cell phone. You don't either, unless you're a truck driver.

Again, you do not want to go there. The internet can be your friend. Pull up 1500 sq ft homes for sale with formica counters, single car garages, room for a 10 cu ft fridge, and linoleum flooring throughout. Now then, home loan rates in 1970 were in the mid-7% range. You want to continue this BS?

My wife grew up lower middle class in rural Alabama. She said they never went on vacation in her entire life. Not one time. They wore hand-me-down clothes & had to be damn near death to see a doctor. Her parents didn't buy any of them vehicles, pay their insurance, college bills, cell phones etc.

I do agree with OPs premise that life has gotten more expensive but I think the lifestyle or expectations have gotten a lot more lavish for regular middle class or lower middle class people too.

You are going to have to show your work on that one.

shite is more expensive, the dollar is worth less, wages are lower and productivity is UP.

But we have a generation of lazy people...

Boomers fricked this country HARD. They vote for entitlements left and right both.
