You’d do better merely adjusting for inflation and laughing at the 50 year old that still think 50k is a good living
Minimum wage is a losing battle
If people are getting hung up on min wage, use average income.
Today it's $51,480 so a factor of 5.47
That gets you a house of $128,272
That gets you a new car for $18,781.

So min wage has gone up 3.45x since 1970.
Let's apply that 3.45x to some of these amounts from 1970, and see how we are doing.
Are you under the impression that people buying homes in 1970 were getting paid minimum wage?
Posted on 4/1/22 at 3:56 pm to LSUFanHouston
If you are a Millennial making minimum wage than that is a you problem. This generation's age group ranges from 41-26 so again if you are making minimum wage or close to it than you took a wrong turn somewhere. Personally I have made higher than both of my parents starting out in my career. I was younger than my parents when I purchased my home and have surpassed my parents in terms of career and education and both of my parent had solid middle class jobs. I think some Boomers and the older Gen Xers do not understand that the economy is different and the economics have changed. I also think some in our generation are whiney people who refuse to grow up. There are great people across all generations and you also have shitty people across all generations. I don't understand the attempts on here to pit generations against each other.

As a matter of fact, you should be against minimum wage altogether* because that’s just the government interfering in private business. So what is the point of this thread, exactly?
*people born without legs are still free to get minimum wage though, obviousl
Who said I wasn't against min wage?
I was using a common statistic.

And Do they blame all this on conservatives? Is this why they tend to vote Marxist?
Seems like they blame everyone from all political ideologies.
Not too sure how many "Marxist" politicians we have these days... but I guess anyone to the left of George W. Bush is a Marxist, eh?

quote:LSUFanHouston, I hope you're not actually a "millennial", and are just trolling.
So for all you boomers just saying "work harder"... this is the ultimate "OK Boomer" moment...
You posted numbers from 1970. The first "boomers" had barely hit the workplace in 1970. Further, inflation-adjusted median income now is SUBSTANTIALLY higher than median income in the mid-70's.
Meanwhile groceries, which you seemed to dwell on, comprised a much higher percentage of the 1970's HH budget than they do now. In the 1970's middle class families had 1 car maybe two. They lasted 4-5yrs before falling apart. They often had manual steering and brakes, and crank up windows. Homes were far smaller and more poorly appointed. They had linoleum flooring, formica counters, and appliances you'd laugh at now.
Every generation has its challenges, but the penis envy of boomers is unbecoming to say the least.
DO BETTER!

The church that protected pedo religious leaders? That church?

I know a few people who are religious who have a very strong connection to their church and to other church members.
I know many more people who go to church 1-2 hours a week and then act very ungodly the rest of the week.

Prices haven't gone up. The value of the dollar has been destroyed. That's apparently the mission of a central bank from what I can tell.

New House - $80,902 (Where can you find anything other than a trailer, at that price?)
So you make minimum wage, but you're too good for a trailer?
quote:
New Car - $11,213 (you might be able to find a several years old used car. Maybe)
In 1970, most people had old cars and they worked on them themselves.
quote:
Movie Ticket - $5.35 (popcorn costs more than that)
In 1970, you didn't go to movies much, you had to work on your car instead.
quote:
Postage stamp - 21 cents (LOL government)
Let's not pretend that you write a lot of letters. You don't even know anybody in Viet Nam.
quote:
Sugar - $1.35 (even walmart brand is $2.12)
This should be a big help to diabetics.
quote:
Milk - $2.13 (can't even find a half gallon for this)
People use to have milk cows in 1970.
quote:
Eggs - $2.03 (only costs $1.94 at Walmart - we have a winner)
People use to have yard birds.
quote:
Bread - 86 cents (well, Walmart bread is just over a dollar)
People use to make cornbread in 1970.

Big part of it.
There's no question inflation and cost of living are out of control, but that impacts everyone.
But, to your point, the OP would have nothing to do with an average house (size, quality, and amenities) from 1970.

I'd be fine with manual steering, etc, but I can't find it.
And a lot of houses on the market these days still have 1970s features and 2020s prices.

Yeah, I'm calling this out as bullshite.
1970 - 2020 Inflationary rate is 7x. Couldn't find the "new" Bidenflation numbers covering the past 16 months.
Using minimum wage numbers is useless. That's what high school kids should make, not adults.

The real minimum wage is zero

Meanwhile, mark my words, your fellow generational buddies will buckle down, figure it out, and get it done. That's the way it works. It's nothing to do with Millennials, X'ers, Boomers. It has to do with you.
"Nerds" had laments in the 70's. "I'll always be bottom of the pecking order." Waah, Waah, Waah. "Homecoming queens always go for the jocks." Waah, Waah, Waah. Then came Gates, and Allen, and Wozniak. Suddenly things were very different. That's how America works, Bud.
This is the land of opportunity. If you don't get it, some hungry South African kid will. He'll immigrate, start a car company and you can work for him.

At this stage, you'd be better off just dropping it, and doing a little honest research.
