There are basically two strategies to gaining control of a populace. One is incrementalism...which takes time..and the other is to slam someone so hard that when it's over they never want to go through that again. Beat a dog hard enough and you don't have to beat it again, just show it the stick you beat it with.
This can be played again next flu season, or take a "Lets not drop our guard and just accept this as the new norm".
Will people allow that? We'll see.

Seasonal flu has vaccines and treatments such as Tamiflu. Covid has nothing. And if not for padding the Covid numbers, it wouldnt be close to flu deaths, which is kept down with vaccines and known treatments

Don't be surprised if going forward pandemics become the new climate change, i.e. a "crisis" used to justify more government control over people's lives. It's the oldest trick in the Handbook for Tyrants. This has been far more effective toward this end in a much shorter time frame than climate change.

It is pretty well established that swine flu has about 0.02% fatality rate. Are you arguing against this?
As of now, covid seems to have about 1% fatality rate, but going with the more conservative models the true rate is likely around 0.5%. Are you arguing against this?

Several major leftist publications are printing articles saying that the virus is good. WAPO and NYT running articles saying that man won’t cooperate with their “green” standards so it’s good that the virus is forcing us to reduce emissions. Also saying that because it’s more dangerous to weaker, older people really isn’t a bad trade off it if means “evil” energy producing industries are being hit hard. They’ve basically tired of holding their tongues and are openly cheering for the virus.
