The West is dry, and we didn't plan well. We need a system to move water from Midwest

I was debating with some southern California people who were for the move of the Rams back to Los Angeles. One was the drought and lack of water. Now there is talk about trying to move water from the Midwest to California. No way they will do that. They took away the Colorado river and destroyed wildlife along that river. Now they want to bring water from the Mississippi river? No way it is going to happen not without a fight!

I'd rather send them water, than have them all start moving here. They're already doing that anyway.

Tell to build desalination plants. If Israel and Saudi Arabia can use them to survive in the ME then the ppl in SoCal can use them to survive in SoCal.

I’m sure all those fly fishing snobs would love Asian carp, gar and whatever else in their rivers.

Even if you pipeline it directly to treatment plants and such the margin for error is razor thin. One frick up and the ecology in that region could frick up quick.

Doesn’t most of their fresh water run directly into the ocean due to ridiculous environmental regs and mismanagement? Let them fix their own problems

Only answer.

The other answer is "we want cheap water".

With all this "global warming" LA will be under water in a couple of years and the problem will be solved. It's called a cesspool

They have plenty of water. They choose not use it. Rain water in rivers and cities mostly flows freely into the ocean.

2019
Despite California’s long drought, trillions of gallons of rainwater wastefully flowing into sea.

In February alone, an estimated 18 trillion gallons of water fell on the state. In urban areas and coastal cities, 80 percent ends up diverted into the ocean, as Los Angeles and other cities built long concrete channels for flood control.

Why make freshwater when we could collect the water that falls from the sky? Even on the driest year in recorded history in 2013, it still rained 3.6 inches in Los Angeles. An inch of rainfall in L.A. generates 3.8 billion gallons of runoff, so you’re talking about more than 12 billion gallons of water that could be captured, but that flows within hours down our concrete streets and into the ocean. There’s enough rainwater to be harvested to produce 30-50% of the entire city’s water needs.

frick the west. I’ll contemplate on their plight this evening when I thoroughly water my land. I may even water a little extra tonight in their honor.

You're relying on the government to engineer this? Yeah, it's already fricked up before it even hits the drawing board.

I just don't understand why these people choose to inhabit and overpopulate areas that are historically drought prone and dry. There's a reason that most of the Native American tribes only seasonally inhabited those areas, and altogether left permanent settlements there hundreds of years ago. I guess it was the buffalo farts causing global warming back then.

But it sure is pretty!*

Try doing some research.

Carlsbad CA has the largest desalination plant in the Western Hemisphere. It produces 50 million gallons of desalinized water per day. This covers up to 10% of San Diego Counties needs.

There are 11 other desalination plants in California.

I guess in your world the poorest 90% can go thirsty…..

Your research should prove how inadequate the California desalination system is. But don’t let the obvious facts of the situation cloud you from trying to score some small, cheap, fractional W.

Then they need more. Naval ships have been making their own water for decades. Cali needs to build more desalination plants its really simple. Have the whole Pacific ocean right there

They can't use desalination plants because of the Delta Smelt, a 2" inedible smelt that lives off of the coast.

How about the west manages their goddamn water better?

They are dumping lots of usable freshwater out to sea because they delta smelt could be affected if the Central Valley were to use that water to grow crops.

Piping water out from the Midwest to the west won’t fix issues, it will just deplete the water in the Midwest.

There was a company over there fighting the regulations and permitting process for near 20 years to build one. It would have made about 5 million gal/day.

The government shot it down at the last moment.

How much water? How are you going to pay for it? Any meaningful amount is going to take massive investments in energy to run the pump stations to lift the water thousands of feet in elevation and overcome line loss. It isn't economical. Better to build reverse osmosis or nanofiltration plants for seawater. But the eco-nuts rejected that.
