The response to C-19 was/is political, but is also a product of the rise of hypersafety

"These kids today..." "Get off my lawn"
Getting that out of the way, many (including myself) have noted how different the response has been to this event as opposed to other epidemics/pandemics.
Certainly, there is a political element to this. Opportunists are taking opportunities. Political bad actors are taking advantage.
But that's not the impetus of the difference between this response and others.
The reason for what has happened is because of the rise of, and pervasiveness of, the hypersafety society - a conscious effort (and a societal demand) for the elimination of all risk of harm or upset.
The seeds of this have been sown everywhere:
In schools and universities - speech codes, sexual assault star chambers, safe spaces, banning speakers, chasing away "wrong thinking" professors and instructors - to the point that comedians rarely even go on college campuses anymore
In daily life - drug advertisements (whether they should even be doing it is another argument) where the "lawyerese" listing of potential side effects takes up at least 70% of the actual commercial, the rise of new puritanism when it comes to alcohol and tobacco.
Helicopter parenting - protecting children from every possible injury, demanding changes to contact sports, getting rid of certain games [tag, Red Rover, etc.] to avoid physical or psychological injury,
anti-bulling campaigns
no fat-shaming

This is just the tip of the iceberg, but explains why so many people have been conditioned to be perfectly happy for the government to tell them what to do "for their health and well-being."

I think most reasonable folks were willing to be erring on the side of caution for a while but as this continued to morph from factual to political...the reasonable people are done with the hysteria and over-reaction.

We’re under the illusion that we are the masters of our own fate. We aren’t.
Viruses, hurricanes, fires, tornados, earthquakes et al., simply don’t care about our feelings.
We think we can legislate and control our way to beating a virus through social distancing or some magic bullet vaccine. We can’t.

I wasn't one, but I'm not kicking the teeth in of anyone that wanted to be cautious...esp since it's obvious to all but the most horrid of people that it's a political football

Lately I've been wondering if helicopter parenting isn't the result of our overconnected world.
Women especially are hypersensitive to being judged by other women. What worse way to be judged than by appearing to be a negligent parent.
Neuroticism has skyrocketed in recent years after all. With social media likely being the culprit.

I agree with most of what you are saying and have been telling people this.
Talk to someone who is over 70. Most will say so if I have this and I am otherwise healthy, I am likely to get over it?
They will say hell, this is better than every day was when they were growing up before the age of vaccines.
Measles, polio, mumps, etc.
There were all kinds of things out there waiting to get them.
Most of the people before the age of antibiotics are too old now, but add that in one hundred years ago.
Yes, this is a dangerous virus. There are a lot of dangerous viruses. This is not beyond the pale of what many of these old timers were used to growing up.
Some don't want skip spending time with their grown children because they don't know how much time they have anyways.
Its an interesting situation.

I seriously think that we have no shutdown and Covid is only a footnote on the news if Hillary is president.

In the beginning, it was somewhat reasonable. We had a relatively unknown strain, possibly very deadly, bad data from just about every source, an unreliable nation was where the ground zero event took place. So extra caution being taken was somewhat palatable.
Now, even in the face of quality data, we've moved to full politicization, states staying closed for increased handouts, goalposts being most by ridiculous lengths, full out media manipulation and government entities stress testing how far they can take their power without pushback. It's gone from ridiculous, to outright dangerous over the last month.

Spot on. Life has risks. Accept it and move on.

it's pure folly and hubris to believe we can eliminate all the risks of life and the universe.

This is where I am with it. Once it became clear that none of this was necessary, it was time to end the charade and move on with our lives.

Again, can you point out why this is a bad thing?
And you can say "the real world isn't PC the world is full as assholes" but you can't then criticize people for trying to teach children not to be assholes
